Blind juggling robot keeps a ball in the air for hours

Sara Reardon, reporter

It's only a matter of time before robots start running away to join the circus. This "blind" robot - it has no visual sensors - can juggle a ball flawlessly and never gets tired. Designed by Philipp Reist and Raffaello D'Andrea of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Z?rich, the juggler uses only mechanical sensors on its paddle to detect the ball's trajectory.

To prevent the ball from flying off in any direction, the paddle is slightly curved. Each time the ball hits it, the robot calculates nine different aspects of the ball's bounce, such as its speed, angle, and spin. The paddle then either speeds up or slows down as it moves to meet the ball, thus keeping it bouncing in a stable arc.

The researchers tried out several different balls such as industrial ball bearings and tennis balls. Nylon balls worked the best, with the robot juggling them as high as 2 metres into the air.

But circus performers and buskers might not need to worry about their jobs after all. The researchers also discovered that the robot is very bad at juggling shoes and Coke bottles - both simple tasks for a human. Well, one who can juggle, anyway.

France's Anti-Business Orthodoxy

In France, running a productive business is not important. Simply creating jobs ? not wealth or innovation ? is the sole purpose of enterprise. At least, that?s the government?s mindset in economically stagnant France. And there?s a danger that this mental disease is spreading to America.

Last month, the French government threatened to nationalize the country?s largest steelworks plant run by ArcelorMittal, after the multinational had idled its blast furnaces due to a 29-percent drop in demand over the past five years. The Socialist government gave ArcelorMittal an ultimatum: restart the furnaces and put French metalworkers back to work, or sell the plant to a buyer willing to fire up production (a tall proposition in the current economic climate). If the firm would chose neither of these options, the government would take the plant by force and resume production itself.

ArcelorMittal and the French government reached a deal earlier this month, in which the furnaces would remain idle, but there would be no layoffs and the firm would sink 180 million euros of new investment into the unprofitable plant.

Unions were outraged and accused Socialist President Francois Hollande of ?betrayal.? He broke with the French orthodoxy of business?s inherent obligation to provide jobs regardless of cost.

Today, the European branch of ArcelorMittal absorbed a write-down?in its value totaling a whopping $4.3 billion. The steelmaker has been trying to get out of Europe and move to higher-demand regions like North America, but the strong arm of the French government is holding it back.

French Minister for Productive Development Arnaud Montebourg at the ArcelorMittal plant in Florange, France.

In a twist of irony, French Minister for Productive Development Arnaud Montebourg said?amidst the dispute, ?We no longer want Mittal in France because they haven?t respected France.? If he was actually concerned about French productivity, as his title would suggest, he would have tried to make doing business in France more attractive instead of chastising ArcelorMittal for idling its plant ? a decision clearly based on productivity concerns.

Reducing France?s sky-high labor costs would go a long way towards this end, as a recent government-commissioned report indicated that a $30 billion reduction in labor costs would put the country back on a reasonable footing of competitiveness with its European neighbors.

But to Monteburg, ?respect? for France means running a business for the benefit of the workers, even if it means running the business right into the ground. With a government thinking like this, it is no wonder that France ranks 21st?out of the world?s 31 highly developed countries in the ease of doing business, according to the World Bank.

Stagnating at 0.2 percent economic growth last quarter, France is among the slowest growing countries in Europe ? and it has a lot of work to do if it wants to break free. The French government should start by changing the way it views business ? from a mechanical tool used to create jobs, to a delicate art that, when handled with care, cultivates wealth, productivity, and human innovation.

Pay attention, America. President Obama chastised Michigan?s transition to a right-to-work state last week as a move to take away workers? ?rights.?? In doing so, he promoted the idea that business?s job is not to create wealth, but to serve as a sort of public good where workers line up for jobs like horses at the trough.

The oft-repeated joke, ?that the problem with the French is that they don?t have a word for entrepreneur,? unfortunately has a lot of truth in it. America must be sure to not let this economically indispensable piece of vocabulary disappear from our minds or enterprising spirit.

Blizzard conditions, from Kansas to Wisconsin, close schools

The first major snowstorm of the season shuttered schools in Missouri, and cut power to 30,000 people in Iowa. Chicago, Milwaukee, and Michigan are expecting as much as a foot of snow Thursday.

Forecasters warned that heavy snowfall coupled with strong winds would create blizzard conditions for morning commuters from Kansas to Wisconsin.

Nebraska's largest school district canceled classes because of heavy overnight snow, as did many districts across Iowa, where drivers were being told to stay off the roads starting Wednesday evening because of whiteout conditions.

But Iowa native Laurie Harry said the weather likely wouldn't stop her from starting up her car Thursday morning.

"If I need to get into work, I'll be here," said Harry, a manager at a Casey's General Store in the western Iowa town of Atlantic. "We've had snow before. Iowans know what to expect. We're used to it."

The heaviest snow is expected across a swath extending from northwest Missouri into Milwaukee, Chicago and Michigan, with predictions of as much as a foot of snow in some areas, according to the National Weather Service. Before the storm, several cities in the Midwest had broken records for the number of consecutive days without measurable snow.

In Iowa, more than 30,000 people were without electricity due to the storm, reports CNN.

In Kansas City, schools were closed as were parts of Interstate 29 near St. Joseph and Kansas City International Airport early Thursday because of traffic accidents,?reports KCTV-5.

Light snow, strong winds and low clouds could make visibility poor and cause delays at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, the nation's second-busiest airport, according to the National Weather Service. The weather has already prompted Delta and United Airlines to allow many affected travelers to change schedules without incurring fees.

PFT: Vick to Jets?? |? NY wants to trade Tebow

NFL: AFC Wild Card Playoff-Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver BroncosAP

Steelers linebacker James Harrison became the poster boy for the NFL?s crackdown on hits to the head of defenseless players last year, and after multiple fines and a suspension, Harrison says he got the message.

Unfortunately for the Steelers? opponents, that message isn?t necessarily one that?s going to make them any safer. Harrison said on Mike and Mike in the Morning that now instead of trying to hit players in the head, he?ll hit them in the knees.

?I?ve really lowered my target area to where it?s down around the knees,? Harrison said. ?Situations come along where you could tackle the guy high. I don?t do that anymore. I tackle the guy low.?

Harrison said, however, that he doesn?t think that makes life any easier on opposing players. Harrison referenced his hit to the knee of Broncos receiver Eric Decker in last year?s playoffs, a hit that caused Decker to suffer a sprained MCL, as the kind of hit he makes now that he wouldn?t have made before he was suspended last season ? and a hit that Harrison doesn?t think makes the game any safer.

?I could have tackled him high, but if I had hit him high, I probably would have gotten a helmet-to-helmet or something and gotten fined,? Harrison said. ?So I hit him low and strained his MCL. . . . They?re saying it?s a life-threatening injury to hit a guy in the head and he gets a concussion and so on and so forth, but I think a life-threatening injury is to go low on a guy and blow out his ACL or whatever, and he?s not able to come back the way he was before. Now he can?t make a living, he can?t feed his family, he can?t do what he does. That?s life-threatening to me.?

Harrison has long expressed doubts that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and others in the league office are sincere about their desire to make playoffs safer.

?It?s for player safety ? at least that?s what they say,? Harrison said. ?But the way I see it is that it all comes down to something different. You say you want to make the game safer but yet you turn around and want to add extra games. How is that making us safer??

That?s a good question. And whether Harrison lowering his target makes the game safer is also a good question.

Your help needed: Find holes in cosmic clouds

Clouds of cold dust in the Milky Way come in unpredictable and complex shapes, making it difficult for a computer to find holes threaded in these dense patches of dust. The human eye is actually much more discerning in spotting the gaps, and astronomers are turning to citizen scientists to help do just that.

Images from NASA's infrared Spitzer Space Telescope showed that there were dark spots in the middle of bright clouds of gas and dust in our galaxy. These blotches were thought to be dense clouds of dust simply too cold for Spitzer's cameras to pick up. And scientists expected far-infrared light observations from the Herschel Space Observatory ? which can see much colder dust than Spitzer ? to reveal these dark regions glowing brightly.

But Herschel data suggested that these spots were actually just holes.

"We were surprised to find that some of these dark clouds were simply not there, appearing dark in Herschel's images as well," Derek Ward-Thompson, director of the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute for Astrophysics in England, said in a statement. But mapping out these unexpected holes is a tricky task.

"The problem is that clouds of interstellar dust don't come in handy easy-to-recognise shapes," he added. "The images are too messy for computers to analyze, and there are too many for us to go through ourselves."

Astronomers who use Hershel, Ward-Thompson among them, teamed up with citizen science portal Zooniverse to make images of our galaxy available online for the public to comb through. A tutorial shows how to tell the difference between a hole and a cloud, explaining that while in the visible light images, it can be difficult to distinguish between interstellar dust and a hole, certain infrared data helps illuminate their differences. All volunteers must do is decide if an image presented shows a glowing cloud, a hole in the sky or something in between ? and the site gives examples of each.

The initiative is part of the Milky Way Project, which has already created astronomy's largest catalog of star-forming bubbles since its inception two years ago.

Fluxys: Major Interest in Loading Small Ships at ... - LNG World News

New Users Book Capacity at Zeebrugge LNG Terminal to Load More Small Ships

New terminal users have booked capacity at the Zeebrugge liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to load more than 200 small ships. This is a new step for the terminal in its development into a hub for supplying LNG as a ship fuel.

Last month Fluxys LNG gave potential customers the option to book long-term capacity at the second jetty currently under construction at the LNG terminal in Zeebrugge. The move was a success, with interest shown in more than 200 loading slots for small LNG ships while at this time there are just a couple of these ships in circulation. This also marks the first time in Northwest Europe that long-term contracts have been concluded for loading LNG ships at a regasification terminal such as in Zeebrugge.

Second jetty scheduled for 2015

The Zeebrugge Port Authority is putting the final touches on the underwater structure for the second LNG jetty. Once the underwater structure is completed, Fluxys LNG will start building the superstructure. The second jetty is scheduled for commissioning in 2015.

The new jetty will enable ships to both unload and load, and will also make it possible to transfer LNG between ships berthed at the two jetties. Large and small LNG ships will be able to load LNG, including bunker ships with a loading capacity from around 2,000 cubic metres of LNG. Bunker ships load LNG, which is then used to supply other ships running on LNG. By way of comparison, large LNG ships that moor at the terminal have a loading capacity of up to 266,000 cubic metres of LNG.

Hub for small-scale LNG use

With the second jetty and the newly booked capacity for loading small LNG ships, the Zeebrugge LNG terminal is paving the way towards becoming a hub for small-scale LNG use. This means using LNG as an alternative fuel for ships and long-haul trucks.

From Zeebrugge, LNG can be transported via small ships to all ports in Belgium and Northwest Europe. Fluxys LNG is currently working with the Belgian ports and a.o. the Flemish government and several other companies to examine what form the basic downstream infrastructure for supplying LNG to ships and trucks should take.

In addition to bunkering LNG with ships, another option is for tanker trucks to load up with LNG at the terminal?s loading station. The loading station is already in operation. The trucks can then bring the LNG inland to supply ships directly or to supply other LNG storage sites, where ships can take LNG onboard. The first truck-to-ship bunkering operation in Belgium took place early December in the port of Antwerp.

LNG can help Europe achieve climate targets

The LNG terminal?s ambitions are based on the benefits of using LNG as a fuel for ships and long-haul trucks. Switching to LNG will result in significantly lower emissions, immediately contributing to Europe?s efforts to hit its climate targets.

Ships powered by LNG ? instead of the usual heavy fuel oil ? emit 15 to 20% less CO2, 85 to 90% less nitrogen oxides and emissions of sulphur and fine particles are negligible. This makes LNG a major alternative ship fuel once the more stringent emission standards for sulphur take effect for the English Channel, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in 2015.

Liquefied natural gas also offers major benefits as a fuel for long-haul trucks. Switching to liquefied natural gas reduces CO2 emissions by more than 10% and emissions of nitrogen oxides by 50 to 60%, while emissions of sulphur and fine particles are negligible.

The Syrian conflict is making 2012 the deadliest year on record for journalists.

NBC News Chief Correspondent Richard Engel and three members of his production crew were released safely from captivity last night, five days after being kidnapped in Syria, the news network reports. It is unclear who is responsible for the kidnapping, but the episode highlights the dangerous nature of reporting in war-torn Syria, a country the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) dubbed the deadliest place for journalists this year.

NBC reports that Mr. Engel?s captors have not been identified but are ?not believed to be loyal to the Assad regime.? (Editor's update: Engel later spoke live in Turkey and noted he believed his kidnappers were indeed pro-government shabiha militiamen.) Engel and his team went missing after crossing into Syria from Turkey last week, and there had been no communication with the network ? neither requesting ransom nor laying claim for the kidnapping ? while the team was in captivity.

After entering Syria, Engel and his team were abducted, tossed into the back of a truck and blindfolded before being transported to an unknown location believed to be near the small town of Ma?arrat Misrin. During their captivity, they were blindfolded and bound, but otherwise not physically harmed, the network said.

Early Monday evening local time, the prisoners were being moved to a new location in a vehicle when their captors ran into a checkpoint manned by members of the Ahrar al-Sham brigade, a Syrian rebel group. There was a confrontation and a firefight ensued.? Two of the captors were killed, while an unknown number of others escaped, the network said.

Engel and his team have since re-entered Turkey and say they were unharmed in the incident, NBC reports.

Syria?s conflict began in March 2011 after a government crackdown on protests calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down. The violence has spiraled into a bloody civil war that has claimed the lives of close to 40,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, according to the United Nations refugee agency.?

But, according to The Wall Street Journal, ?the multiplying of militias on both sides of the conflict has quickly and vastly complicated the scenarios for how fighting might end or a political transition may be negotiated, and what may come next after the end of the regime.?

"The civilian militias to come out of this conflict are going to make Hezbollah [in Lebanon] look like a walk in the park," Joseph Holliday, a senior research analyst at the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, told the Journal. Syria is not simply seeing a faceoff between government forces and rebel fighters, but the involvement of Al Qaeda-linked fighters and Iranian militants have also been noted.

CPJ projects that 2012 will be the deadliest year yet for journalists, with 67 journalist deaths registered through mid-December alone. The high numbers are in large part attributed to the conflict in Syria and how it has impacted local and international journalists trying to report there. Four international journalists were killed in Syria in 2012, but the majority of the 28 journalists killed there this year were local reporters, largely working online.

?This feels like the first YouTube war,? BBC Middle East correspondent Paul Wood told CPJ. ?There?s a guy with a machine gun and two guys next to him with camera phones.? Mr. Wood added that local journalists are facing multiple risks. ?We?ve seen pro-regime journalists targeted by rebels ? it is well known. But opposition journalists say the regime is intent on targeting them as journalists.?

The number of fatalities related to the Syrian conflict approached the worst annual toll recorded during the war in Iraq, where 32 journalists were killed in both 2006 and 2007.

Paul Wood ? who covered Iraq and numerous other wars, said the Syrian conflict ?is the most difficult one we?ve done.? Bashar al-Assad?s government sought to cut off the flow of information by barring entry to international reporters, forcing Wood and many other international journalists to travel clandestinely into Syria to cover the conflict. ?We?ve hidden in vegetable trucks, been chased by Syrian police ??things happen when you try to report covertly.?

With international journalists blocked and traditional domestic media under state control, citizen journalists picked up cameras and notepads to document the conflict???and at least 13 of them paid the ultimate price. One, Anas al-Tarsha, was only 17 years old. At least five of the citizen journalists worked for Damascus-based Shaam News Network, whose videos have been used extensively by international news organizations.

Engel is an experienced reporter who reported on the Iraq war in its entirety and has ?covered wars, revolutions and political transitions around the world over the last 15 years,? according to NBC. But there are many factors making reporting by inexperienced journalists in high-risk countries like Syria increasingly common today.

In addition to the rise of Internet journalism, there are other factors like ?relatively cheap flights to some of the world?s trouble spots? and ?shrinking budgets for foreign news? that ?have dramatically reduced barriers to entry for would-be foreign correspondents,? reports the BBC.

For organisations working to improve the safety of journalists it?s a cause for increasing concern.

?There?s something of a worrying trend developing,? says Hannah Storm, director of the International News Safety Institute. ?I?m hearing it from people that have recently graduated. I?m seeing it on Facebook. And I see it sometimes when I talk to students in universities.

?It feels like now in places like Syria there are more and more people in their early or mid-20s with little or no experience - but with an overriding enthusiasm which makes them want to go out there and make a name for themselves, without taking the realities on board.?

Many of these young reporters are working as freelancers, which can create an additional risk. Freelance reporter Austin Tice has been missing since August when he was kidnapped near Syria?s capital, Damascus.?The Monitor reports that the?number of journalists kidnapped has gone up,?and "with the rise in the number of reporters operating in dangerous places like Syria ? and with many parties seeing value in targeting them ? many expect the threat to persist.? However, while all journalists reporting in conflict zones can expect to face threats, the increasing number of freelancers can make working in places like Syria ?particularly acute, as they are often operating without significant institutional backing and experience.?

"More and more of those journalists are freelancers because of the nature of the changing field," El Zein says, referring to the rise in the number of?freelancers reporting in dangerous places, traditionally more a world for journalists on the staff of major publications.

"Especially in Syria, the risks are very high for journalists, and a freelancer going in there without any support structure ? it can be very risky and daunting."

The Christian Science Monitor?s Tom Peter has been in and out of Syria over the course of the past few months and noted other distinct differences in reporting from Syria compared to other conflict zones in the past. ?With Aleppo just a two-hour drive from Kilis [Turkey], many journalists have opted to drive into Syria each morning and return to Turkey to write stories and sleep. Not only is it safer, but electricity and Internet access are a sure thing,? he writes.

The commute made my job of writing and filing stories easier, but it also made for a surreal reporting experience. In one afternoon, I might find myself taking cover as windows blew out around me in a bombing. By that evening, I'd be back in Kilis getting my hair cut in a barbershop where a miscommunication led to an accidental mud facial mask.

I've always thought the hardest part of conflict journalism is the anxiety you feel before and after an assignment. When you're navigating a war, you're too busy to think about the what-ifs. Commuting in and out every day creates one of the strangest cycles of stress and decompression I've ever experienced.

JPMorgan names new mortgage banking chief

(Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co promoted Kevin Watters to be chief of its home loan business, relieving Co-Chief Operating Officer Frank Bisignano of the temporary assignment to clean up the lender's mortgage issues.

Watters, 44, had been responsible since 2010 for originating mortgages and now will also oversee mortgage servicing and problem loans and hold the title CEO of Mortgage Banking.

"This role is a natural expansion of his successful leadership of mortgage originations," Bisignano said in a statement from the company on Tuesday.

In February 2011, Bisignano was assigned by company CEO Jamie Dimon to run the mortgage business and fix problems stemming from bad loans made before housing prices collapsed.

JPMorgan has made more home loans this year than any other U.S. lender except Wells Fargo & Co .

This year JPMorgan and other banks have been enjoying a surge of revenue from refinancing mortgage loans at lower interest rates engineered by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

"We will continue to see the refinancing business stay strong for the next couple of quarters as long as interest rates stay low," Watters said in an interview.

Watters said he expects that refinancing will taper off by the end of next year as demand builds for loans to purchase homes.

Watters will report to Gordon Smith, who at the end of this month will become sole CEO of Consumer & Community Banking over the retail branches, credit cards and mortgages.

Before Watters was put in charge of mortgage originations, he was head of business banking in the branch network for five years, according to the statement.

Watters has been with the company for 13 years and worked for Bank One, which JPMorgan acquired, on Internet banking services.

A native of Philadelphia, Watters said he got some of his early business experience working with the Crisco brand of shortening for Procter & Gamble Co .

PFT: Dez Bryant likely needs bone graft

robparker

When ESPN commentator Rob Parker said last week on First Take that he doesn?t think Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III is authentically black because, among other things, Griffin is engaged to a white woman, ESPN suspended Parker and tried to distance itself from the comments.

But Parker?s comments aren?t going to be easy for ESPN to sweep under the rug. Because Parker?s comments have led to a closer examination within ESPN of the ways that employees who make a habit of saying outrageous things are damaging the brand.

Richard Deitsch of SI.com spoke to several ESPN employees who said they?ve had enough of the Worldwide Leader bringing in people like Parker to shout offensive things on the air in a cheap ratings grab, employees who say that ESPN must re-examine its growing ?debate? format, which makes a mockery of the very word ?debate? by resembling something closer to Jerry Springer and Maury Povich than Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas.

?I don?t wish to be lumped in with that nonsense,? one ESPN employee told Deitsch.

Other ESPN employees have noted that Parker?s comments actually aired three times before network management admitted the comments were offensive: ESPN First Take airs live in the morning, then re-airs immediately following the live airing, and then later in the day ESPN2 airs Best of First Take. Parker?s comments appeared not only on the live airing but also on the re-airing and the ?best of? show. So not only did no one at ESPN think to remove Parker?s comments from the re-airing, but someone at ESPN made an affirmative decision to give Parker?s comments the ?best of? seal of approval.

?They have created a culture of this,? another ESPN employee told Deitsch. ?The fact that they didn?t remove it from the re-air proves their intent wasn?t to do anything.?

Eventually, ESPN faced criticism from enough quarters that they had to do something. But the bigger question is this: Why did ESPN hire Parker in the first place?

Parker?s entire approach to working in the media, dating to his pre-ESPN days as a Detroit News columnist, has always been to draw attention to himself by making provocative statements. When covering press conferences, Parker?s specialty is asking questions designed not to gather information, but to scream, ?Look at me!? The most famous example came late in the 2008 NFL season, when Parker asked former Lions coach Rod Marinelli, whose son-in-law was the team?s defensive coordinator, ?Do you wish your daughter would have married a better defensive coordinator??

It was telling that Parker waited until Marinelli was about to be fired to frame his question in such a mean-spirited manner. The Lions went 0-16 that season, so it was certainly fair game to ask hard questions to Marinelli about how he assembled his coaching staff, but Parker isn?t the type to ask hard questions so much as he?s the type to ask rude questions. Parker knew Marinelli was down, so Parker decided to get one last kick in at Marinelli?s final post-game press conference.

That incident got Parker demoted by the Detroit News, and Parker resigned after he was demoted ? apparently because he knew he had a plum job waiting for him at ESPN, which wanted someone who would favor provocation over civility. That?s what First Take does best. Or worst.

ESPN says it is reviewing Parker?s comments, but really, what is there to review? Parker believes there?s something wrong with a black man falling in love with a white woman. ESPN producers think Parker expressing that belief constitutes some of the best commentary that First Take has to offer. If ESPN wants to repent for airing those appalling views, and if ESPN wants to improve the discourse, there?s only one thing to do: Cancel First Take.

Feds: Ex-city official to admit $53 million theft

Robert Ray / AP file

Rita Crundwell, former comptroller for Dixon, Ill., leaves federal court in Rockford, Ill., May 7.

By NBC News staff and wire services

A former longtime comptroller for Dixon, Ill., now is expected to plead guilty to charges she stole $53 million from the city?s accounts and used it to fund her renowned horse-breeding business and lavish lifestyle, federal prosecutors say.

Rita Crundwell is scheduled to enter her new plea on Wednesday morning before U.S. District Judge Philip G. Reinhard in federal Court in Rockford, Ill., the Justice Department said in a news release.

Crundwell, 59, had pleaded not guilty in May to a single federal count of wire fraud.

Prosecutors allege that since 1990, Crundwell stole more than $53 million from Dixon, where she oversaw public finances as the city comptroller, by diverting it to an account she had set up for personal use, then misleading city officials.

Authorities say Crundwell used the money to buy luxury homes and vehicles, and spent millions on her horse-breeding operation, RC Quarter Horses LLC, which produced 52 world champions in exhibitions run by the American Quarter Horse Association.

Wire fraud carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The federal case is separate from 60 state theft charges filed against her by prosecutors in Illinois.

Dixon Mayor Jim Burke said in September that the state charges were a backup plan in case the federal trial fell flat.

?The way we were pushing this was to get some insurance that if it was a slap on the wrist that there would be more from the state,? Burke was quoted as saying by WQAD.com.?

More than 400 horses and a luxury motor home once owned by Crundwell have been auctioned off by federal authorities, according to media reports.?If Crundwell is convicted, much of the money will be returned to Dixon ? after the federal government takes its cut for caring for the horses for months, The Chicago Tribune reported.

Dixon, with a population of approximately 15,733, is about 100 miles southwest of Chicago.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Prosecutors allege that for years Rita Crundwell, a champion quarter horse breeder, kept a $53 million secret. Rock Center correspondent Harry Smith reports.

Pentagon wants Lockheed to focus more on F-35 execution

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon wants Lockheed Martin Corp to focus less on short-term business goals and more on successfully delivering the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to the U.S. military, the Defense Department's chief weapons buyer said on Tuesday.

"We want to know that when they come to us with an initiative or a proposed solution to a problem that it's motivated by the welfare of the program, not focused on a short business goal that they're trying to accomplish," Frank Kendall told reporters.

Kendall said he discussed the issue earlier Tuesday with the incoming head of the F-35 program, Major General Christopher Bogdan, who in September described the relationship between Lockheed and the government as the worst he had ever seen.

Kendall said Bogdan's concerns focused on communications between the Pentagon's Joint Program Office and the company.

He said he was surprised when Lockheed Chief Executive Bob Stevens called him on Friday, shortly before Lockheed announced that its president and chief operating officer, Christopher Kubasik, was resigning after admitting to an ethics violation.

But he said he looked forward to working with Marillyn Hewson, who was named on Friday to replace Kubasik and succeed Stevens as chief executive in January.

Kendall said had gotten to know Kubasik over the past three years but had also met Hewson, and did not believe the ethics issue would have a negative impact on the relationship between the government and Lockheed.

"This stuff isn't personal. We're adult professionals. We come to things with our own business perspective, and we can meet and work out deals," the former Raytheon Co executive said.

He said it was helpful to get to know industry executives over time, but he had no concerns about working with Hewson or any other member of the Lockheed leadership team.

Hewson told analysts on Friday that the F-35 program would be her biggest priority in her new job.

Lockheed shares closed 37 cents higher at $90.18 on Tuesday.

Lockheed is pressing the Pentagon to conclude negotiations about a fifth batch of F-35 fighter jets, which have been under way for nearly a year. Senior Pentagon officials and Lockheed executives met to discuss the contract on November 1.

Researchers unlock ancient Maya secrets with modern soil science

ScienceDaily (Nov. 12, 2012) ? After emerging sometime before 1000 BC, the Maya rose to become the most advanced Pre-Columbian society in the Americas, thriving in jungle cities of tens of thousands of people, such as the one in Guatemala's Tikal National Park. But after reaching its peak between 250 and 900 AD, the Maya civilization began to wane and exactly why has been an enduring mystery to scientists.

Writing in the Nov.-Dec. issue of the Soil Science of America Journal (SSSA-J), an interdisciplinary team led by Richard Terry, a Brigham Young University soil scientist, now describes its analysis of maize agriculture in the soils of Tikal. Not surprisingly, the study uncovered evidence for major maize production in lowland areas, where erosion is less likely and agriculture was presumably more sustainable for this community of an estimated 60,000 people.

But the team also discovered evidence of erosion in upslope soils, suggesting that farming did spread to steeper, less suitable soils over time. And if Maya agriculture did cause substantial erosion, the soil loss could eventually have undercut the Maya's ability to grow food, say the researchers.

The findings are just the latest example of how invisible artifacts in soil -- something archeologists literally used to brush aside -- can inform studies of past civilizations. That's because artwork and buildings can crumble over time and jungles will eventually conceal ancient farm fields, but "the soil chemistry is still there," Terry says.

He explains, for example, that most forest vegetation native to Tikal uses a photosynthetic pathway called C3, while maize uses a pathway called C4. The soil organic matter derived from these two pathways also differs, allowing researchers to make conclusions about the types of plants that were growing in the soils they test.

Thus, by analyzing soils in different areas of Tikal as well as looking at the layers that had formed in the soils, Terry and his collaborators were able to map the areas where ancient maize production occurred, including lowland "bajo" areas and possibly steeper slopes, as more food was needed.

Questions like this about past farming practices have always interested archeologists, Terry notes. But the tools of modern soil science are now enabling these scientists to ask increasingly sophisticated questions about how ancient peoples tried to sustain themselves -- and whether their treatment of the land was a factor in cases where they failed.

"[These tools] open us up to thinking about the world in ways that we haven't before," Terry says. "We have changed the paradigm amongst the archaeologists."

The research appearing in SSSA-J was funded by grants from the National Science Foundation and Brigham Young University.

Unless you go mobile, your online travel business - The Next Web

The online travel industry is not only about search these days. The world is increasingly social and mobile ? think smart-phones, tablets, e-readers ? and the?number?of tech-savvy consumers is rising. Social and mobile are not going away, so, now more than ever, travel companies must keep pace.

Understanding , influencing and delighting a customer during all stages of the travel experience will also be key to?survival?in the travel industry.? The New York Times recently published a?list? of top 10 travel websites. It offers good examples of companies that provide services that modern travellers want.

The travel industry is about mobility and collaboration, necessitating API adoption. Networks of hotels, airlines and rental cars along with the need to reach a diverse range of travelers on the go means that providers need to integrate more disparate data sources into a wider variety of apps and platforms.

APIs hold the key to seamless, rapid integration and broader reach. Mashery offers some examples of how APIs are used in a smart way in travel industry.

I interviewed Barbora Novosadova from?Tripomatic, the winner of the last?API Mashup Contest?(of which I am the organiser).?Tripomatic not only combines great APIs but also makes money thanks to a good knowledge of online travel trends. Barbora shared her view with us.

What works in the online travel business??

With online travel it is the same as in any other industry ? making a great product that people love. Even though the online travel market is very crowded, there are still areas that work in a very rigid and old-fashioned way and they are waiting for disruption. A good example is the global distribution systems (GDS) for air ticket bookings. They are very inflexible and costly. Innovative services that enable getting along without GDS would be very well received.

Tripomatic 520x342 Unless you go mobile, your online travel business will be dead in five years

What do people want in travel??

With all the travel information available online, even people who used to rely on travel agents book their holidays themselves. They can feel overwhelmed with all the options and they look for services that make their decision-making easier. However, they do not believe that one size fits all and they seek tailor-made recommendations.

Also, as people are used to daily deal sites and other services focused on sales, they want to get better value for their money. They know good deals are available everywhere and they want to find them.

Where can you make most money in online travel??

Competition in the travel sector is fierce, and prices for advertising are very high. Because of that it is possible to make good money on displaying PPC ads or banner advertising. Affiliate websites can get high commissions on travel packages, accommodation or car rentals. On the other hand, we have witnessed a decline in commissions for air tickets over the last few years. This year the trend has been even more visible and it will probably not get better any time soon. The airlines themselves try to sell more packages such as flight-and-hotel, and they incentivize their affiliate partners to do the same.

What is your opinion on affiliate marketing in the travel industry??

Affiliate marketing works very well in the travel sector if you have a sufficient amount of visitors and you use it to provide additional service to your users. If, for example, you compare prices from various sources or provide great product reviews, people will appreciate it and you can make money on it. On the other hand, if your site only uses affiliate marketing to display advertising, you will be better off with PPC ads.

How will the industry look like in 5 years?

I believe that in five years you will be dead unless you provide great mobile services. When we launched the Tripomatic iPhone app, we assumed that people would plan their trips on a computer and use their phone to check the itinerary or the map on the go. We were pretty surprised when our users started using the app mostly for travel planning even though it is not as convenient as the website. We have learned that you have to offer the full package on mobile devices. Users? will not? settle for an app with restricted functionality and in five years they will probably be even more demanding.

Platform and device fragmentation are currently the main reasons holding back the mobile boom. Building for five and more platforms adds so much complexity and cost. I expect further consolidation on the market as some will fail to hop on the trend and ultimately lose. It is hard enough for a travel startup now and it will be even harder as the entrance barriers are rising.

mzl.vuwokdak.320x480 75 220x316 Unless you go mobile, your online travel business will be dead in five years??mzl.jjwiqpnd.320x480 75 220x316 Unless you go mobile, your online travel business will be dead in five years

What are the challenges of a startup that works in a very competitive area and focuses on the whole world (as far as travel destinations are concerned)?

Startups generally deal with restricted resources and have to laser-focus on things that bring the biggest value. We had to learn to be very data-oriented ? we cannot cover all interesting destinations around the world, but we have to focus on the ones our users really search for. In our case the 80/20 principle?works perfectly ? 80% of our users visit 20% of the destinations. We would love to add some kick-ass features, but unfortunately we know they would only be used by a minority of people. We measure as many things as possible to get the data we need for the best possible decision-making.

What instruments of online marketing do you recommend (or not) using??

I would definitely not recommend using any black hat techniques such as buying new fans on Facebook from dubious sources, or black-hat SEO. They can work in the short-term but they will backfire later on.

What works for us really well is infographics, such as our Shoestring Budget Travel Guide, which was widely spread and hit mainstream media around the world. Although the immediate traffic spike is short-lived and non-converting, the backlinks we gained boosted our organic traffic by more than 15%. On that note it is important to mention that it comes for a price ? we spent more than six weeks creating the infographic.

We have not been satisfied with Facebook ads. We used them among other things to attract new fans to our Facebook Page. They did bring us the fans but they were inactive and probably not interested in what we do. So if you want to work with your Facebook page, and the number of fans is not just a vanity metric, I would recommend using other ways such as building a community.

What what you recommend for building a community??

Building a community is neither fast nor easy, but you can get incredibly valuable insights from your users. We send an email to every user who created an account on Tripomatic and ask them what we can improve or help with. People appreciate that we are interested in their opinions and they are really helpful. We make most of our new features based on these suggestions. It has also helped us build a strong relationship with our users, because we find out what they struggle with and help them quickly.

How does Tripomatic work? Do you grow as you planned or faster??

We started as a website travel planner in June 2011 and in the first year we struggled a bit to get the traction. We underestimated the importance of mobile devices in the travel industry, which set us back a few months. However, since the launch of the Tripomatic iPhone app in May 2012, our user base has grown significantly and we are back on track. We believe that an improved version of the iOS app together with an app for Android, which should be available in few weeks, will help us grow even faster. We are investing heavily into product development and have some amazing things up our sleeves.
