One moonshot team buys up another

Moon Express

An artist's conception shows Moon Express' lunar lander.

By Alan Boyle

One of the competitors in the race to send the first private-sector probe to the moon says it's acquired the assets of a rival team, marking what could be considered a "Netscape moment" for the commercial moonshot industry.

Moon Express said the acquisition of Colorado-based Next Giant Leap will add to its momentum in the $30 million Google Lunar X Prize competition, which promises a huge payoff to the first team that sends a rover to the moon for an exploratory trek that includes transmitting high-definition imagery back to Earth. Moon Express and Next Giant Leap are among 26 teams vying for the prize.

"There are many synergies between our companies," Bob Richards, Moon Express' co-founder and CEO, said in today's announcement, which was issued during a Google Lunar X Prize team summit in Washington. "We are all stronger together, and we look forward to carrying on the innovation and vision of the Next Giant Leap founders and partners."

Both ventures were selected by NASA in 2010 for?data-sharing contracts?that are worth up to $10 million each. Both companies have been working on rovers that would hop across the lunar surface. The Next Giant Leap effort produced a "hopper" design that attracted a $1 million commitment from the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory to fund the development of a guidance, navigation and control system testbed.

Richards told me that the relationship with Draper Lab on the control system "is perhaps the most obvious and strongest inheritance of the acquisition we will be actively working," but he also placed great value on the other partnerships that Next Giant Leap had forged over the past few years. Among those partners are Sierra Nevada Corp., MIT Space Systems Laboratory, Aurora Flight Services, Jolted Media Group, the Center for Space Entrepreneurship and the Challenger Center for Space Science Education.?

Richards said that the acquisition involved a payment to Next Giant Leap, but by mutual agreement, the amount would not be disclosed. Moon Express probably ranks among the more financially solid ventures chasing the Google Lunar X Prize, considering that one of the venture's co-founders is dot-com billionaire Naveen Jain.?

Next Giant Leap

An artist's conception shows Next Giant Leap's proposed lunar lander. Moon Express' Bob Richards said that his venture "will subsume Next Giant Leap designs to the extent possible and practical. ... The main hardware difference is that the Moon Express lander uses the NASA Common Spacecraft Bus heritage and the Next Giant Leap lander was based on the SNC Orbcomm bus."

Michael Joyce, founder and president of Next Giant Leap, said the acquisition serves as validation of his team's value, and as a testament to the dedication of his partners. "Next Giant Leap and its partners have made remarkable technical progress," he said in today's announcement. "We are proud to be able to offer that value in support of the vision and resources of Moon Express that continue our dreams toward the moon."

Richards said Joyce and another Next Giant Leap co-founder, Todd Mosher, have been invited to serve as advisers to Moon Express.

The Google Lunar X Prize is offering $20 million to the first team that lands a rover on the moon, sends it on an excursion of at least 500 meters and gets it to send high-definition images and video back to Earth. If a second team pulls off the same feat, that team would receive $5 million. Another $5 million is reserved for bonus prizes. The prizes expire if no team fulfills the requirements by the end of 2015, and if a government-backed lander beats the teams to the lunar surface, the grand prize would be reduced to $15 million.

Richards and Jain have said Moon Express intends to launch its lunar lander as early as 2014.?

How you can watch SpaceX's Dragon dock with the space station

You can have a ringside seat to witness the space station's robotic arm pull in Dragon, the first commercial spacecraft to visit the outpost. Time to watch is between 10 a.m. and noon EDT.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / May 25, 2012

In this photo made available by NASA, the SpaceX Dragon commercial cargo spacecraft approaches the International Space Station on Thursday, May 24, 2012 for a series of tests to clear it for its final rendezvous and grapple on Friday, May 25.

If all continues to go well, by about 10 a.m. EDT, the craft will have moved to within 10 meters of the International Space Station. Space station flight engineer Don Petitt, the mission's grappler-in-chief, will use the station's Canadian-made robotic arm to grasp Dragon.

To watch the history-making event and listen to the play-by-play, point your Web browser to NASA-TV at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html.

Although the process of grappling and berthing looks to be fairly simple, it isn't, notes astronaut Catherine Coleman, who grappled the Japanese HTV on its second supply mission to the station in January 2011. She likens it to trying to pass something from one car to another ? when both are traveling at interstate speeds.

On orbit, it's a Grey Poupon moment at 17,500 miles per hour between one vehicle that weighs more than 1 million pounds and another weighing a tiny fraction of that. Still, Dragon can inflict a world of hurt on the station if something goes wrong. Hence the delicate touch Petitt must apply and the slow pace he'll use to pull Dragon to the station's docking port.

Flight controllers are trying to maintain a schedule that allows Dragon's capture and berthing to take place during the sunlit portions of the station's 90-minute orbits.

(AP) ? Residents of this remote hamlet that lacks running water and electricity, and lives off cattle ranching and coca-growing were preparing a barbeque for Wednesday's planned handover of a French journalist by Colombia's main leftist rebel group.

Village council leader German Pena said more than 1,000 people were expected for the event, for which villagers built a wooden platform with fresh cut logs and planks.

"We killed six cows and two horses. We heard the French eat horse meat," Pena joked.

French journalist Romeo Langlois, 35, was taken by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia on April 28 when it attacked troops he was accompanying on a cocaine-lab eradication mission, killing three soldiers and a police officer.

He was wounded in the left arm but video images of him said to have been taken the day of his capture and broadcast Monday as a first "proof-of-life" showed him looking relaxed as his arm was sutured and a female guerrilla asked him questions.

Langlois has covered Colombia for more than a decade and was on assignment for France24 television. He has also contributed to the newspaper Le Figaro.

He was to be delivered to a commission including the International Red Cross, former Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba and French government delegate Jean-Baptiste Chauvin, who arrived Tuesday night in the Caqueta state capital of Florencia.

It's a roughly seven-hour drive from Florencia to San Isidro on rutted dirt roads that in the current rainy weather develop watery pits that can easily mire four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Reporters with international news organizations invited to cover the handover shared San Isidro's single, partially paved street on Tuesday with small groups of rebels, clad in olive green combat fatigues and carrying assault rifles. The rebels made small purchases at stores or stopped to chat with villagers.

They declined to provide details of the planned handover, saying they were not authorized to comment.

This region of southern Colombia is a stronghold of the FARC, as the rebels are known by their Spanish initials. It is laced with deep jungles, coca plots, fast-moving rivers and villages that appear on no maps.

"War is something we experience almost every day," said Pena. "There have been innumerable battles in this area. We've seen bullets flying on the main street of the village."

The hamlet of about 100 families is 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the larger village of Union Peneya, administrative center of a municipality near where Langlois was captured.

Some of the villagers doing the communal preparation for Wednesday's handover expressed fears they could be targeted by the army for reprisal, accused of collaborating with the guerrillas.

"They think we're part of the guerrilla forces just because we live in this region and for that reason they target us sometimes," said Pena.

At mid-afternoon on Tuesday, a white Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter flew over San Isidro.

Colombia's defense minister, Juan Carlos Pinzon, said the military would suspend operations in the zone for 48 hours beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The FARC, which took up arms in 1964 and which authorities say funds itself largely through the cocaine trade, has an estimated 9,000 fighters. It has recently stepped up hit-and-run attacks on soldiers and police after suffering years of setbacks from Colombia's U.S.-backed military.

The rebels announced in February that they were ending ransom kidnapping, a good-faith gesture made in hopes of launching peace talks.

The FARC released last month what it called its last "political prisoners," 10 soldiers and police it had held for as long as 14 years.

The rebels said in a communique on May 6 that they took Langlois prisoner in part because he was wearing military garb.

The journalist was wearing a bullet proof vest and helmet issued by the military, Pinzon has said, adding that he discarded them during the morning-long firefight with the guerrillas.

Japan minister visits nuke plant amid safety worry

TOKYO ? Japan's environment and nuclear minister visited the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant on Saturday to inspect a spent fuel pool at the center of safety concerns and said it appeared to have been properly reinforced.

The visit by Goshi Hosono, apparently aimed at demonstrating the safety of the facility, came amid renewed concerns about conditions at the plant's No. 4 reactor after its operator reported a bulging of the building's wall. Nuclear regulators ordered a new investigation and seismic tests of the building and its pool.

The building was damaged by an explosion and fire soon after the Fukushima plant was hit by a massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. The pool, located at the top of the building above the reactor, remains one of the plant's biggest risks due to its vulnerability to earthquakes.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., has reinforced the structure and says it now can withstand temblors as strong as last year's quake.

A small group of journalists was allowed to enter the reactor building for the first time with Hosono. Inside there were piles of broken wall panels, pieces of cement and mangled equipment, showing the magnitude of the explosion.

Massive Wildfire Rages in New Mexico

Smoke from a summer wildfire darkens the sky over New Mexico in 2011.

Lightning strikes sparked two wildfires in southwestern New Mexico that have merged and spread over 130 square miles, destroying more than a dozen structures.

With smoke and ash spreading over a wide area, health officials warned residents to limit outdoor activities as the Memorial Day holiday weekend unfolded. ?ARK

The Associated Press via The Guardian:

The fire burned early Saturday through remote and rugged terrain around the Gila Wilderness and has grown to 85,000 acres (34,400 hectares) or more than 130 square miles (338 square kilometers).

? More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze that resulted from the merger earlier this week of two lightning-sparked fires. Fire officials say nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds.

The blaze has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings, and the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon was placed under a voluntary evacuation order.

Before bid, USOC must 1st choose summer or winter

United States Olympic Committee Secretary General Scott Blackmun discusses with the media an agreement between the IOC and the USOC at the SportAccord conference in Quebec City Thursday May 24, 2012. (AP) ? Now that they've made peace with their international partners on the financial front, leaders at the U.S. Olympic Committee must decide whether to try to bring an upcoming Olympics to America.

The key to that decision will be weighing the pros and cons of bidding for a Winter Games versus a Summer Games ? a debate that will begin in earnest when the USOC board meets next month in the Bay Area.

Two people with knowledge of how the USOC decision-making process would work told The Associated Press that members of the U.S. delegation were being urged by international leaders last week, during private conversations at meetings in Quebec City, to think seriously about the Summer Games in 2024.

Those people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the bid decision is made privately.

"In anything you do with this, where there's a lot at stake and you've accomplished something extremely important and you've got momentum swinging in a different direction, you go for the top," one of the people said of trying for a Summer Olympics instead of a Winter Games. "Don't sell yourself short."

On Thursday, the USOC announced it had solved one of its core problems with the IOC: rewriting the formula for revenue sharing through 2040.

The USOC had said it wouldn't consider a bid for any Olympics until the revenue issue was resolved. Now that it is, CEO Scott Blackmun said the "strategy is to develop a strategy."

The momentum for a U.S. Summer Games bid will be weighed against what would be a less-expensive path, and likely one with fewer obstacles ? a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Denver, which has formed an exploratory committee, would likely enter that process as a favorite, with Reno-Lake Tahoe, Bozeman, Mont., and Salt Lake City also considering bids. The USOC would have to start from scratch in the search for a summer city, with New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Dallas among the most likely candidates, said both people familiar with the USOC process.

One of those people said there would be no drawn-out, public domestic bid process, as there was for the 2016 Games, when Chicago spent nearly $10 million to win the USOC phase, then went on to an embarrassing last-place finish in a contest ultimately won by Rio de Janeiro.

Others in the U.S. Olympic circle believe that the IOC always has more difficulty finding countries to host the Winter Games and that IOC leaders would look kindly upon a solid winter candidate from the United States, such as Denver.

"I think our strategy should be, let's host a Winter Games, a Pan-Am Games, a few meaningful world championships," USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny said. "That's the kind of stuff we need to do to someday bring a Summer Games back here."

As the United States has learned, bidding for an Olympics is fraught with obstacles and political hurdles ? and they don't always go away when you win.

The last two Olympics on American soil were filled with problems: Atlanta (1996) took a bad rap as being too commercialized and spread out, while Salt Lake City (2002) had a massive bid scandal.

The USOC has not, in the past, been able to provide a financial guarantee from its federal government ? an issue that should not be taken lightly, according to both people with knowledge of the process. Chicago had city and state guarantees for the 2016 bid, though it's hard to guess, in retrospect, whether that helped, hurt or made no difference in the city's last-place finish.

It remains a big unknown whether Chicago or New York, which got rejected for the 2012 Games, would want to jump through the IOC hoops after what's happened in the past.

And IOC President Jacques Rogge, who will be long gone by the time the 2024 bid process starts, has repeatedly said bringing an Olympics to the African continent is a priority for the IOC. There are no African candidates for 2020, which means the next Olympic bid process could pit an American city against one trying to bring the games to Africa for the first time.

There's still time to consider a summer bid, but if the USOC wants to pursue the Winter Games, the clock is ticking. The 2022 Olympics will be awarded in 2015.

Denver has many facilities in place and has improved its international reputation over the past several years. The high-profile, international SportAccord meetings held in Quebec City last week took place in Denver in 2009, and the city got good reviews.

Denver remains, however, the only city to be awarded an Olympics then give them back. The 1976 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria, were originally slated for the Mile High City. Denver voters chose to give them back because of concerns over cost, urban sprawl and pollution.

"You could take the safe route and go with Denver, but that issue is still there and it will be used whether they think it will or not," one of the people familiar with the process said. "Americans have come a long way since then. But they need to be watertight with the city they pick. To have an exposure like that, I'm not saying it's a fatal flaw, but it's a weakness that will be exposed because there still a perception, right or wrong, that the United States is only in it for the money."

Homes MSP Real Estate Blog: New Housing Trends Cater to Baby ...

MP900401993The Baby Boomer generation has been affecting change since they were born, and it continues as they move into retirement age. More sophisticated in their housing wants and desires than previous generations, many are preparing for their next phase of life by selling their their family homes and moving on to new experiences... or re-designing their homes to accommodate their retirement lifestyle.

The trend for Baby Boomers and?first-time homebuyers alike is to?look for small, smart homes in walkable neighborhoods. Some of the features they are looking for? are similar,?and they?are having an impact on new housing trends.

Some features the National Association of Home Builders?is seeing?Baby Boomers?are looking for include...

  • Home offices - many Boomers are continuing to work as they retire, but often in a different capacity... maybe as consultants or starting businesses of their own which they run from home
  • Tech/media centers - many in the Boomer generation are tech-savvy, and want amenities such as WI-FI, media centers, remote control lighting and security features
  • Wider doors and hallways - Boomers are thinking ahead about aging in place in their new homes... wider doors and hallways make it easier to move?in furniture now, and will accommodate wheelchairs if needed on a temporary or permanent basis in the future
  • Better lighting/big windows - as we age we tend to need more light; in addition to bigger windows for more natural light (and better views as well!), they are adding more lights such as under cabinets and in stairwells, along with multiple switches and dimmer controls
  • Main floor bedroom and bath - more than 40% of new homes now have master suites on the main level, up 15% from only a decade ago; the bedrooms are also bigger, with walk-in closets,?separate tub and shower and dual sinks
  • Easy to maintain exteriors and landscaping - many Boomers are looking for relief from yard work, painting and other landscaping chores and choose to buy in a townhome or condo community where that is taken care of for you; those choosing single family homes often opt for maintenance free exteriors, smaller lawns and low maintenance landscaping... or flower beds?with easy access?for the garden enthusiast
  • Flex space - this kind of space that can be adapted for use as a guest room, office, hobby room, library as needs change?is becoming prevalent for all age groups as the trend?moves to smaller smaller, smarter spaces... reminds me of 1950's ramblers where the 'third' bedroom was often this flexible kind of space

Vitals - Grill, drive, play: A doctor's Memorial Day safety tips

Alexander Shalamov / featurepics.com

Remember to fully cook meat and keep raw food away from cooked food.

By Dr. Tyeese Gaines

After months of frigid temps, dodging rainstorms and wrapped in warm blankets, Memorial Day is the first holiday to celebrate the start of warmer weather.?The sun is out. Sunglasses are on. Sweat is glistening. Finally, there's hope that summer is on the way.?

Most Memorial Day celebrations are outside in the heat, gathering with friends or family over food, or consuming alcoholic beverages.?Yet, even in May's typical 70- to 80-degree weather, being healthy and preventing illness should be on the forefront of the brain.

Please pass the potato salad? with a side of food poisoning
The lack of refrigeration at barbecue lunches invites bacteria to join the party. The biggest culprits are dishes made with mayonnaise, such as potato salad or coleslaw. Not fully cooking meat on the grille and accidentally touching cooked food with the raw meat utensils are also setups for food poisoning.

Food poisoning symptoms are not subtle. The abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting and diarrhea often hits suddenly, after two to six hours of eating the offending food. Most times, it has to simply runs its course. But, remember to stay hydrated and avoid milk or dairy until the diarrhea stops.?

Pregnant women, children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems have to be especially careful.

In order to prevent infection, cook meat until fully done. Keep raw food far away from cooked food. And, keep the cold items in a good quality cooler with lots of ice. Maintain the cooler as close to 40 degrees?Fahrenheit?as possible.

Don't shrivel up
During hot weather months, especially when exercising, make it a point to drink more fluids. Waiting until thirst sets in is not always a reliable judge of dehydration, especially in older adults. Many people are already dehydrated long before feeling thirsty.?The best judge of hydration is the color of urine. A well-hydrated person's urine is clear or pale yellow. Anything darker, and it's time to drink up.

Children and elderly adults are most sensitive to severe dehydration. But, regular, healthy adults are still 60 percent water. Even a small amount of dehydration can keep the body from working optimally. Women are suggested to drink eight glasses a day of fluids and men, 12 cups.

Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages -- such as coffee, green tea and soda -- actually dehydrates even more because the person loses fluids by urinating. So when drinking caffeinated liquids, increase fluid intake to make up for what's lost.

Running out of steam
Heat illnesses usually happen from staying in the heat too long. Sweating is the body's way of releasing internal heat, but sometimes sweating alone can't keep up with the body's rising temperature. Horsing around or exercising too much in hot weather increases the risk of dehydration. Young children, older adults and being overweight adds to that risk.

Heat exhaustion is characterized by profuse sweating, lightheadedness, nausea, headache and vomiting. Muscle cramps may occur and even precede heat exhaustion. Immediate treatment should involve getting out of the heat, sitting in front of a fan or using cold water and ice to get cool.

If not, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is life-threatening. The dizziness and lightheadedness worsens, the person becomes confused, has seizures or can fall into a coma. The person is no longer sweating and the pulse is fast and weak. People with heat stroke need to be immediately cooled and brought to a hospital.

Alcohol and energy drinks make heat exhaustion and stroke more likely due to the dehydration. Also, ingredients in energy drinks -- especially caffeine -- can alone raise the body's temperature in hot weather.

Poisoned by a good time
Drinking many alcoholic beverages back-to-back -- typically five or more -- over a short period of time can cause alcohol poisoning. When the blood's level of alcohol increases to dangerous levels, the person can become unconscious and breathing can slow down, decreasing oxygen to the brain and body. If the person vomits while unconscious, they can choke to death on their vomit. If any of these symptoms occur after someone drinks alcohol, get them to medical attention immediately.

And driving this weekend? Remain sober. Nearly half of motor vehicle accidents involve alcohol. And, that number goes up around holidays and proms, making Memorial Day weekend a prime danger.
