Harper says China will lend panda pair to Canada (AP)

BEIJING ? Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper wrapped up a visit to China aimed at boosting oil sales by announcing Saturday that Beijing will lend two of the country's prized giant pandas to Canadian zoos.

Harper visited a zoo in the southwestern city of Chongqing to say that the Chinese government is loaning the panda pair to Canada for the next 10 years, Harper's press secretary Carl Vallee said.

News photos showed Harper looking on as his wife carried a squirming baby panda.

The pandas are expected to arrive in Canada early next year and will go to the Toronto and Calgary zoos for five years each. The giant panda is unique to China and is regularly sent abroad as a sign of warm diplomatic relations or to mark breakthroughs in ties.

Harper also met with Bo Xilai, Chongqing's Communist Party secretary on Saturday, Vallee said. No details of their meeting were immediately available.

One of China's most prominent political figures, Bo has been the subject of speculation in recent days after his once-close aide, former police chief Wang Lijun, went to the U.S. consulate in a nearby city purportedly to seek asylum.

Wang's whereabouts is unknown. The uncertainty has fueled speculation over a falling-out between Wang and Bo, who has been seen as maneuvering for a seat on the ruling Communist Party's Politburo Standing Committee, which will appoint new members later this year.

New method for creating tissue engineering scaffolds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 10, 2012) ? Researchers at Northwestern University have developed a new method for creating scaffolds for tissue engineering applications, providing an alternative that is more flexible and less time-intensive than current technology.

A paper describing the results, "Low-Pressure Foaming: A Novel Method for the Fabrication of Porous Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering," was featured in the February issue of the journal Tissue Engineering.

Through tissue engineering, researchers seek to regenerate human tissue, such as bone and cartilage, that has been damaged by injury or disease. Scaffolds -- artificial, lattice-like structures capable of supporting tissue formation -- are necessary in this process to provide a template to support the growing cells. Over time, the scaffold resorbs into the body, leaving behind the natural tissue.

Scaffolds are typically engineered with pores that allow the cells to migrate throughout the material. The pores are often created with the use of salt, sugar, or carbon dioxide gas, but these additives have various drawbacks; They create an imperfect pore structures and, in the case of salt, require a lengthy process to remove the salt after the pores are created, said Guillermo Ameer, professor of biomedical engineering at the McCormick School of Engineering and professor of surgery at the Feinberg School of Medicine.

The new scaffolds, created from a combination of ceramic nanoparticles and elastic polymers, were formed in a vacuum through a process termed "low-pressure foaming" that requires high heat, Ameer said. The result was a series of pores that were highly interconnected and not dependent on the use of salt.

The new process creates scaffolds that are highly flexible and can be tailored to degrade at varying speeds depending on the recovery time expected for the patient. The scaffolds can also incorporate nano-sized fibers, providing a new range of mechanical and biological properties, Ameer said.

"The technology could prove very useful in repairing ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears and in bone void fillers," Ameer said.

Besides Ameer, other authors of the paper were E.J. Chung, M. Sugimoto, and J.L. Koh.

Most Teens Who Self-Harm Are Not Evaluated for Mental Health in ER (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Feb. 10 (HealthDay News) -- Most children and teens who deliberately injure themselves are discharged from emergency rooms without an evaluation of their mental health, a new study shows.

The findings are worrisome since risk for suicide is greatest right after an episode of deliberate self-harm, according to researchers at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

The researchers also found the majority of these kids do not receive any follow-up care with a mental health professional up to one month after their ER visit.

"Emergency department personnel can play a unique role in suicide prevention by assessing the mental health of patients after deliberate self-harm and providing potentially lifesaving referrals for outpatient mental health care," said lead study author Jeff Bridge, principal investigator at the hospital's Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice, in a news release. "However, the coordination between emergency services for patients who deliberately harm themselves and linkage with outpatient mental health treatment is often inadequate."

For the study in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, researchers examined Medicaid data for adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. Only 39 percent of the patients discharged after trying to harm themselves received a mental health assessment in the emergency department.

Only about half of the children who had visited the ER for a mental health-related reason within the previous 60 days received a mental health evaluation during their visit to the ER for self-harm.

Up to 90 percent of young people who deliberately harm themselves meet criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder, particularly mood disorders, the researchers said.

The U.K.'s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommends that people who show up in an emergency room for self-harm should receive a mental health evaluation before being released from the hospital.

"This study highlights the need for strategies to promote emergency department mental health assessments, strengthening the training of physicians in pediatric mental health and adolescent suicide prevention and timely transitions to outpatient mental health care," Bridge said.

U.S. campaign style at frontline of winning votes (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The policies of U.S. President Barack Obama and his potential Republican rivals differ, but when it comes to campaign trail fashion they could not be more alike with their style at the frontline of winning votes.

Whether it's rolled-up sleeves, or a checked shirt with no tie, candidates vying for the White House in November balance their fashion to appeal to average Americans and yet still look like a world leader, said experts at New York Fashion Week.

With the U.S. economy slow to recover from recession and the rise of the Occupy Wall Street movement putting economic inequality on the national agenda, experts said the Republican candidates were focusing more on casual styles.

But don't expect to see them in shorts and t-shirts, they still need to retain the look of a leader, experts say, with some criticizing former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum's staple sweater vests as maybe a little too informal.

"The Republican candidates have dressed down more," said Tracy Taylor, U.S. editor of luxury online retailer Net-A-Porter. "It could be that they are trying to counterbalance Obama and how buttoned up and chic and refined he always looks."

"It's also a response to Occupy Wall Street," she said.

Obama has won more than just praise for his fashion from designers and editors. U.S. Vogue editor Anna Wintour hosted a reception on Tuesday to launch "Runway to Win," a collection from designers including Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch and Diane von Furstenberg, being sold online to raise money for his campaign.

But Obama didn't always have such a polished look, said Robert Burke of luxury consultants Robert Burke Associates. "President Obama used to get razzed about having oversized suits that were two sizes too big," Burke said.

GAP JEANS, SWEATER VESTS

Republican frontrunner former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney may be worth up to $250 million after a career on Wall Street, but jeans -- reportedly bought by his wife in Gap -- and checked shirts with no tie have been a mainstay in his wardrobe.

"Romney has actually had to really tone it down because he's known as this really swanky, sleek businessman. So he had to go further by wearing ill-fitting jeans and looking more roughed up so he could communicate more with the people," Taylor said.

Santorum drew attention not only for his surprise victory in the Iowa caucuses in January and sweep of nominating contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on Tuesday, but for his preference for sweater vests in a variety of colors that even sparked a Twitter account by supporters -- @FearRicksVest.

"Santorum looks like a college professor at best," said Burke. "He's trying to project a very conservative, all-American, 'Leave it to Beaver' look."

Some fashion critics said that as the Republican primary campaign progresses, Santorum has had to step up his style.

"With his sweater vest he was just trying to break out from the pack," said Patricia Pao, of Pao Principle retail consulting firm. "However, it fails to make him look 'Presidential.' I think that is why we are seeing him (now) alternating with wearing suits."

Former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich has rarely been seen without a suit and tie and his wife Callista favors skirt suits and coiffed hair. Fashion experts say they fit the mold of a political couple.

"Newt and Callista are a matching pair even down to the helmet hair," said Irma Zandl, president of the trend and consumer insight firm the Zandl Group.

Burke was a little more blunt: "I don't know that a fashion statement and Newt Gingrich can be said in the same sentence. I don't think that's really on his radar."

Fashion critics say style also does not appear to be a concern of Texas congressman Ron Paul and likened his look to that of a college professor.

"He dons a suit and tie when he needs to for a debate, but apart from that he's walking around in a striped polo shirt," said Net-A-Porter's Taylor.

FIRST LADY STYLE

The wives of potential Republican presidential candidates will find it hard to follow in the footsteps of First Lady Michelle Obama, who quickly won over fashion designers and critics four years ago with her style choices, experts said.

There are websites devoted to documenting Michelle Obama's wardrobe and she has won praise for not only supporting emerging U.S. designers, but also mixing designer fashion with clothes from Main Street retail chains.

"Michelle Obama has set the stakes very high when it comes to her fashion choices," said Marc Karimzadeh, an editor at Women's Wear Daily. "Anyone hoping to come into the White House as first lady is going to have to measure up to Michelle Obama."

With Romney the Republican frontrunner to challenge Obama for the White House, Kibwe Chase Marshall, an editor for trend forecasting firm Stylesight, said it might be up to their wives "to duke it out for the title of fashionable first couple."

"(Ann Romney) has yet to seize her potential to captivate American voters via a dynamic choice in coat or shift dress. If and when she does, expect a political race of another sort to really pick up steam," Marshall said.

Some 90 designers are showing their fall 2012 collections at New York Fashion Week, which starts on Thursday. It is followed by similar events in London, Paris and Milan.

Flexible Pex Pipe a Smart, Less expensive Option for your Home ...

Price successful and proven best for home use . this is the reality for pex plumbing pipes. Created from a flexible plastic material, pex pipe is actually a lot more like tubing. It?s much cheaper than the stalwart copper piping and less expensive. Pex is simple to install and is verified to perform well in most any residence. New homes built will frequently use pex plastic tubing more than standard metal pipes. When you have an older home and have plumbing repairs or strategy to replace all the plumbing in your home, pex piping will be the greatest option because of its cost efficiency, easy installation and functionality.

Pex Piping ? Most Cost Effective Selection About

When it comes to plumbing home improvement, materials could be pricey whether you do the work yourself or employ a plumber. Nevertheless, with pex pipes, any repair job is a lot more inexpensive. Think about this: when you use metal pipes, you have to buy T-shaped fittings, 45 degree fittings, elbow joints and others in order to get about corners and other obstructions when laying pipe for plumbing. Nevertheless, with the flexible, plastic pex pipe you don?t need to be concerned about those additional fittings. The pex piping bends about those obstructions with ease, thereby lowering your materials expense and even labor expenses because it takes less time to install.

Top Notch Performance

Pex pipe tubing beats other supplies like copper and galvanized pipe hands down. It is great for piping that delivers your drinking water supply towards the home simply because it?s impervious towards the various chemicals located in water supplies. In addition, there is much less chance of corrosive build-up in plastic pex pipe from minerals and chemicals, in contrast to galvanized or copper pipe. Upkeep is a breeze with pex due to the fact it?s less difficult to fix and replace than metal piping which would need an unique saw and achievable welding to seal joints. Best of all, this flexible pipe is a lot more resistant to freezing temperatures than metal, incurring fewer instances of frozen pipes.

Pex for Indoor Use Only

Simply because pex pipe tubing is produced from flexible plastic, it?s not at its very best in outdoor applications. PVC or metal pipe is very best in this situation. Pex is vulnerable to UV light so it should not be exposed to the sun as it could break down the plastic material. Plus, outdoor freezing temperatures may trigger pex to become brittle and damaged, despite the fact that it can withstand freezing temperatures with indoor plumbing use, mainly because of the warmth of the home?s heater. Therefore, pex flexible plastic tubing should only be employed for indoor plumbing.

Keep in mind that pex pipe tubing is fairly various from the plastic piping from the 1980s. Pex utilizes a totally distinct technology than those old plastic pipes used a couple of decades ago. Plus, it has been verified time and once more; otherwise new home builders would not trust pex in their construction needs. For your subsequent indoor plumbing project or repair, look into pex pipe. You will be amazed by the cost difference and quality.

NFL 2011

After last year's game, CTV memorably cut to one of its studio sports anchors, Jay Onrait, just as Roger Goodell passed the Lombardi trophy to Packer executives. Onrait looked like nothing so much as Canada's most disappointed father. The moment was perfect in its imperfection. I'd like to think that, in that instant, Onrait's death stare was the death stare of every Super Bowl viewer above the 49th parallel.
