Studies Link Pesticides To Bee Colony Collapse Disorder

I must have missed the part where the GP was laying responsibility at the corporations' feet for not figuring this out prior to putting the pesticide on the market.

What I read was the straightforward and common sense argument that once science discovers a negative side effect of this pesticide that was previously unknown, and could plausibly contribute to the serious problem of colony collapse, that we should investigate it.

Considering the importance of bees to agriculture, I think the potential of any link between pesticides and colony collapses warrants both extreme concern and funding.

What's not as simple about that as it was made out to be?

Are you saying maybe we shouldn't investigate the possible link between pesticides harming bee's ability to navigate and colony collapse? I guess because if a link was confirmed this could hypothetically mean we would want to make corporations have to be more thorough and test pesticides for non-lethal effects even though it is difficult and ? So to prevent that horrific future from coming about, we should refrain from figuring out of the link exists?

Well whatever, I don't care. The link should be investigated. When we know the truth then we can worry about the ramifications for future policy.

Traditional Tanzanian music falls in popularity, but demands preservation

Muziki wa dansi music was inspired by Tanzanian national pride after its independence in the 1960s. Today, a heritage project is trying to archive the unique music for future generations.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

Muziki wa dansi ? a uniquely Swahili blend of jazz, rumba, and traditional music ? was born in newly independent Tanzania in the 1960s, on a wave of national pride. For decades Tanzanians swayed to these beats, broadcast by the country?s only radio station.

?It was all about love, all about unity, all about coming together and building a new nation,? says Benson Rukantabula. ?When you listen to the music now, you still have the same feeling.?

Think you know Africa? Take our geography quiz.

But not many Tanzanians still do listen. In recent decades, muziki wa dansi has been replaced on the airwaves by Western Top 40 hits.

Now, around 250,000 hours of Tanzanian classics ? along with tribal dances and historic speeches ? are moldering in the archives of the Tanzanian Broadcasting Corporation, on reel-to-reel analog tapes slowly turning to dust. The Tanzania Heritage Project, which Mr. Rukantabula cofounded, is fighting to keep this music alive, raising money to digitize it and make it available to the public once again.

?Every minute that these tapes sit in the heat and humidity of Dar es Salaam, the quality is being reduced,? says Rebecca Corey, another of the project?s cofounders. ?As the last of these musicians passes on,? she adds, ?there will be no one to carry on these traditions if no one can hear the music.?

King Kiki, a Tanzanian musical legend, has been playing rumba for 50 years. ?A few young people these days like my music, but not many,? he says. ?With time, they will come to appreciate it.?

Cop goes undercover to bust California students

(AP) ? On his second trip through high school, former C-student Alex Salinas got a lot of A's.

He was 22, however, and an undercover narcotics officer going by the name Johnny Ramirez. When his first semester progress report showed a 3.25 average, the baby-faced police rookie made a mental note: Stop turning in homework assignments.

Eight months later, the ruse was up, and Exeter, a bucolic citrus-growing community in California's Central Valley, was turned on its ear after a school-day police sweep ended with a dozen Exeter High students in custody on drug charges.

Some people wondered how the deception by Salinas could have gone on for so long in the small town of just 10,000 people. Others lamented that the problems of the big city had come to the quaint community of antique shops and historic murals set amid a stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada.

"It's amazing we were able to keep a secret in this little town for that long," said Police Chief Cliff Bush, who had been searching for years for just the right officer to pull off the undercover ploy. "People in little towns tend to know everything about everybody."

Leading the campus sweep this month was the tall, lanky Salinas, dressed in the crisp black uniform and combat boots of the Exeter Police Department instead of the T-shirts and sneakers he had worn as Johnny Ramirez.

Still, there was no mistaking the boyish face and the wide smile gleaming with braces.

"A lot of jaws dropped when they saw me," Salinas said. "They knew me as that kid at school that they hung around with, and then the next thing they're in handcuffs and I'm in a uniform."

The sting got more attention from the media than a drug bust of 12 students normally would because of something the chief now laments: It happened the same week as the debut of the Hollywood comedy "21 Jump Street," which features ? you got it ? undercover cops fighting crime at a high school.

Chief Bush insisted it was not a case of life imitating art.

"A day or two later I became aware of the movie," Bush said. "The last thing I would do is check movie premieres. This just happened to coincide with the movie's release."

There had been no major complaints about drug dealing at the 1,000-student school that sits within sight of the police station, but Bush said he had been thinking for years about doing an undercover sting to send a message.

One day last summer, he ran into Salinas, who was weeks away from graduating from the police academy. Salinas had ridden along with Bush years earlier when the chief was still a patrolman.

Bush eventually approached Salinas with the plan. With it came a full-time job on the city's 17-member Police Department ? an offer Salinas wouldn't refuse.

As Johnny Ramirez, Salinas attended Monarch football games and pep rallies. He purposely landed himself in detention so he could meet people outside of the four classes he attended before reporting each afternoon to the county drug task force headquarters for briefings and homework assignments. He made a Facebook page and forged friendships, which made the deception hard for him to bear.

"There were a few students I got to know who are good kids, and I did feel kind of bad for being their friend and then being something different," he said.

Only the principal, vice principal and Johnny's guidance counselor knew about the operation, school Superintendent Renee Whitson said.

"Even I didn't know the name he'd go by," she said.

Still, a moment of panic erupted on the first day of school last fall when a teacher pointed to the new kid and joked, "We've got a new narc on campus. They tell me he's wearing a green shirt." Johnny Ramirez's shirt was green.

Eventually students sold the new kid marijuana and cocaine, the prescription painkiller hydrocodone and the muscle relaxant Soma.

"There was certainly no celebration on the day of conclusion. It was a very sad day," Whitson said. "These are our students. We hope this is the necessary wakeup call to make this positive for their lives."

As the school year winds down, the arrested students are in the midst of review board hearings. Only three are older than 18, and one student's parents were also arrested for investigation of methamphetamine possession.

In the end, large quantities of drugs were not confiscated and none of the arrests involved trafficking significant quantities, though many purchases were for amounts that exceeded "personal use," Salinas said.

Was it worth keeping an officer off Exeter's streets and on a school campus for eight months?

Yes, Chief Bush said. But he is almost embarrassed that the undercover operation has garnered so much publicity, mostly because of his own bad timing regarding the release of "21 Jump Street."

"This is what I was trying to avoid, that we busted the local Scarface at the high school," Bush said, making reference to another Hollywood movie, this one about a drug kingpin. "Turns out they were just tiny amounts, but if you've got just one kid dealing drugs at school, that's too many."

The chief hopes the arrests have a lasting impact on all students, though he does realize he might have created a problem of another kind in Exeter.

"I'd hate to be the new kid at school next year," he said. "They won't make very many friends."

HOUSTON (AP) ? For hours after their boat sank, Ken Henderson and Ed Coen treaded water in the Gulf of Mexico, talking about life and death while struggling to survive. For more than 30 hours, it worked.

Then Henderson was forced to make a decision that would save his life, but not his best friend's.

"This is the last-ditch effort, but I'm going to go for help or you're not going to make it," Henderson told Coen, just before cutting the strap that connected them in the deep, cold waters off the Texas coast.

"I understand," Coen responded, giving Henderson a last set of instructions. "Kiss them babies for me."

It was Friday around 4 p.m. when they parted.

On Tuesday, days after the fishing trip ended in tragedy, Henderson recounted the harrowing tale for The Associated Press, alternating between sorrow, guilt and laughter as he recalled the last 30 hours of a man who had been his best friend for 25 years.

The saga began Thursday around noon. They had been fishing for a few hours when Coen noticed the 30-foot Scarab was filling with water. Henderson started four bilge pumps. Water sprayed everywhere.

Coen quickly unhooked the boat from one of the many oil and gas rigs in area where they had been fishing. Henderson revved an engine, but the saltwater that had leaked in kill them quickly.

"Mayday, mayday, mayday Marine 16," Henderson called over his Marine radio. He got no response.

He dialed 9-1-1 on his cellphone. There was no signal.

Suddenly, the bow went up. Henderson flew back. Coen jumped to the right, his sunglasses and cap flying off. Already wearing life jackets, the two ex-Marines grabbed extra life jackets and other floating items.

"The water was so cold it took your breath away," Henderson said.

Coen, a slim man, immediately began to shiver.

After failing to swim to a gas well nearby, the pair prepared for a long wait.

And they talked.

"We talked about stuff that I'll never talk about. We discussed things and discussed life. We discussed families. We just tried to keep ourselves occupied," Henderson said.

As night fell, they took turns laying on each other's chests, conserving body heat. They tied their life jackets together to ensure they wouldn't drift apart in the dark.

They dozed. Coen started hallucinating. Henderson tried to keep Coen's arms and legs moving. He called him a sissy to get him angry. But as morning came, Coen's situation worsened. It took time to wake up. He tried to light a cigarette that wasn't in his mouth.

"I came to the realization that one of us may not make it or that both of us may not make it," Henderson said. "I just felt helpless sitting there with him."

About 3 p.m., the pair drifted toward a manned rig. Henderson realized his friend wasn't keeping his head above water.

Henderson told Coen to kick to the rig. He pulled him as he swam, but Coen was sideways. Henderson told him to kick. Coen thought he was.

And so Henderson decided to cut the strap.

He swam for two hours, but lost his sense of direction. He was tired. Frustrated. Depressed. He rolled on his back and floated. It was after 7 p.m. when he woke up.

He saw another rig in the distance, and prayed for strength.

He swam, seeing ice and crystal trees in the water. He reminded himself constantly there were no trees. He made it past a blinking light, a milestone that pushed him on toward the rig.

It was 2 a.m.

On legs so weak he could barely lift them, Henderson slowly pulled himself up the rig's barnacle-covered ladder.

"I'm here. I'm on a derrick," Henderson said out loud.

He found a galley with food, water and a phone. He called his wife, and told her to call the Coast Guard. He said he was on rig 633A.

"It was over 50 miles from where we went in the water," Henderson said.

All he could think of, though, was Coen. Convinced his friend would survive, he told the Coast Guard where they had parted.

Two hours later, Henderson was ashore in the Coast Guard dispatch room when haunting words came across the radio. A fisherman had found a body in a life jacket.

Later, in the hospital, Henderson saw his friend. He apologized and asked for forgiveness. He promised to fulfill his wishes, make him proud and look after his girls.

"I felt like a part of me had died out there," Henderson said.

Paperless Faxing: How to Get Started | My Green Living Ideas

Unprecedented technological progress has made the environmentalist?aspiration of the ?paperless office? an actualized?reality, in the business world.?Today, whatever your?business, you?have?the practical and affordable ability to bring a formative?eco-consciousness into routine office operations,?by going paperless with online faxing!

What is??Paperless? Faxing?

To effectively transition from traditional to paperless faxing, you should first understand the concept of a ?paperless office,? and specifically what faxing sans paper entails. What IS this ?paperless? trend anyway?
The term??paperless? refers to any kind of work that customarily used or was accomplished with paper, but has been adapted for compatibility, with new information and communications technologies.
Correspondingly, a??paperless office? is a work environment in which paper use and dependency has been greatly reduced?by converting documents into digital form. Indeed,??paperless? is now used interchangeably with terms like digital, electronic and online, and?to represent the progressive movement to make eco-conscious practices?a fact?of everyday office environments.
?Paperless faxing? is today?s foremost embodiment in applied practice of this movement?s workplace integration, of technology and environmentalism. Paperless faxing is essentially online faxing, ?online fax services? empower businesses to use existing web connections and email systems. Online faxing helps send and receive the entire document facsimile communications as digital file attachments,?ready-to-read anytime and anywhere.

Double Green Motivation

A fundamental step in getting started with paperless communications is becoming motivated to do it?properly and consistently. Launching a voluntary process of change requires confidence that its benefits outweigh any potential negatives.
Happily, as to paperless faxing specifically, all the motivation you need is all but mustered for you. The?advantages of switching to online fax services are many, universal, automatic, immediate and proven?both for your business, and the environment at large.
The fact is that traditional landline fax machines enact a demonstrably heavy toll, again, both for your business and the environment. Faxing the traditional way generates staggering amounts of waste: it burns through paper, energy and natural resources, and it accumulates untold costs on your budget, resources, time and efficiency.

Switching to online fax services eradicate this waste across-the-board. Paperless faxing saves you money, space and time, boosts productivity, facilitates documentation and information-sharing, and enhances security. And, by the switch?s very nature, you?ll do the environment a real ongoing solid.
Now that?s motivation! A meaningfully green decision replete with full cost/benefit rewards for you.

Choosing Your Service

Finally, your decision to go paperless confidently made, it?s time to choose your online fax service provider.
Multiple targeted resources have been developed precisely, to aid businesses in transitioning from traditional to online faxing.?Most critically, top online fax service providers offer free trials for test-driving their services for optimal compatibility with your needs and priorities. These trials effectively complete your transition to paperless in practice.
Users of online fax services from Metrofax, for example, are privileged to 30 risk-free days in which Metrofax literally guides you through its every digitized process, provided for greatest ease in paperless fax communications.

World News - Expert: Al-Qaida web forums crippled in suspected ...

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

Al-Qaida?s Internet message forums, which it uses to communicate its messages to the world, have been crippled in a suspected organized cyber-attack, according to a terrorism expert.

Three of the terror network?s main forums ? Al-Shamukh, Al-Fidaa, and Ansar al-Mujahideen ? have gone offline, said Evan Kohlmann, a terrorism analyst for NBC News. The most important, Al-Shamukh, has been inaccessible for almost five days, he told msnbc.com in an email.

?An event of this scale very rarely occurs -- less than five times in the last five years -- and is usually the result of deliberate actions taken by a major international government,? Kohlmann said.

?The last time there was an outage of this duration, it was later revealed to be the work of British government hackers intent on delaying the distribution of the English-language Inspire Magazine produced by Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in June 2010,? he added.

Hacker attack cripples al-Qaida web communications

Kohlmann speculated that the outage could be an attempt to prevent the circulation of a footage taken by Mohamed Merah, the Islamist extremist who recorded his gun attacks in France that killed seven people, including three children shot dead at close range.

Before Merah was killed in a gunfight with police at his Toulouse apartment on Thursday, he told investigators he had posted his footage on the web. However, the video has not yet surfaced.

"It is impossible to say for certain, but these sorts of outages seem to be most often tied to the release of high-profile terrorist media," Kohlmann said. "There is nothing more hotly-anticipated right now among hardcore jihadists than a video recording of the reprehensible acts allegedly carried out in France."

The Department of Defense did not immediately comment on the outages.

Are You Ready To Start A Home Based Business Online?

You are at : Home | Business

???

By : Cynthia Brandolini ?? zero times read
Submitted 2012-03-25 22:48:42 The world today inspires countless individuals to seek out an independent means to generate income to support themselves and their families. While there are an endless number of reasons why these people start this search, the bottom line is that every day sees a new batch of people trying to find out how to start a home based business online. The Internet has made it easier than ever to get started, and to find customers for your business.

One of the most important points that everyone needs to understand from the beginning is that an effort to generate income online should be treated as a business. If it is treated as an occasional hobby, the business will never grow to produce any reasonable level of income. There are also many, many people who seem to think that all they have to do is sign up at a website and then the money will come pouring in. This is just very unrealistic. The Internet is not some kind of magic money machine. I think of this as a lottery mentality - all you need is a dollar and a dream. Except these people seem to see an entitlement to the riches they think others are raking in; if they join one program (purchase their lottery ticket) they expect instant cash - they expect the Internet to pay out with better odds than the lottery. If you can avoid this way of thinking and these expectations that someone else is going to do everything for you, you will be far ahead of the majority of people trying to earn money online.

So, this is a real business. You will need to educate yourself on what it takes to build and market a business online. If you are already an expert in marketing, then you are well on your way. If, like most of the population, you are not already well-versed in marketing, you will need to put forth some effort to learn about it. Think about how any business makes money - someone has to buy something. It is no different online. Your business will need to sell something, whether it is hard goods, electronic goods, or services, and your business will need to find customers to buy those goods or services. This is really no different from a regular business in the offline world. The biggest difference is that you can get started with almost no overhead, and the advertising to find those customers is much more affordable. You can find customers all over the world, but it will require marketing to do so.

There are many, many different types of businesses that can succeed online. If you already have an offline business, you could start by selling your existing products from a website. This greatly expands your customer base from local traffic to global web surfers. Another possibility is to register at any of the many freelancing websites to take on projects in your area of expertise. There are large numbers of businesses and individuals looking to hire professionals on a project by project basis. An easy way to get started with an online business is to sell the products and services of others as an affiliate. There are plenty of resources online to help you get started with affiliate marketing.

Remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Also remember that all of life, even business, has ups and downs. Persistence, dedication, and determination will see you through. By doing all your research, by being ready to learn what it takes to market online, by committing yourself to this as a long-term endeavor, you will be successful in your efforts to start a home based business online.

ADHD Diagnosis Rates Rose Sharply in Past Decade

FRIDAY, March 23 (HealthDay News) -- In the past decade, the number of children receiving a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has risen by 66 percent, new research indicates.

In 2000, just 6.2 million physician office visits resulted in a diagnosis of ADHD. By 2010, that number had jumped to 10.4 million office visits.

"This study is really like a 10,000 foot aerial view of this issue," said study author Dr. Craig Garfield, an assistant professor of pediatrics and medical social sciences at Northwestern University in Chicago. "We looked at the trends in visits to doctors for ADHD over the last decade, and we were interested in overlaying some of the FDA's public health advisories and the introduction of new medications to see the effect on those trends."

The findings are published in the March/April issue of Academic Pediatrics.

ADHD is now a common condition in children and teenagers in the United States, according to background information in the study. The parent-reported incidence of the disorder is about 10 percent, or 5.4 million children. Symptoms of ADHD include an inability to focus, trouble controlling emotions and hyperactive behavior, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Treatment for ADHD may include medications -- usually stimulant drugs -- and behavioral therapies, according to the NIMH. However, new medications -- and new health concerns -- altered treatment decisions over the decade studied.

In 2002, a nonstimulant medication, Strattera (atomoxetine), was approved for use in ADHD. In 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued warnings that sudden death and suicidal thinking had been linked to Strattera. That same year, the FDA also expressed concern about a potential link between amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (Adderall) and cardiovascular risks, as well as adverse psychiatric symptoms. That same warning was extended to all approved ADHD medications in 2007, according to the study.

For their study, Garfield and his colleagues reviewed data from a national database from 2000 to 2010. They examined office visits for patients younger than 18.

In addition to finding a 66 percent increase in the number of office visits resulting in an ADHD diagnosis, they also found that more children were being treated for ADHD by child psychiatrists than by pediatricians. At the start of the study, about one in four children saw a psychiatrist for their condition. By the end of the study, more than one in three was visiting a psychiatrist for ADHD.

Despite possible concerns about safety, stimulant medications remain the mainstay of treatment. In 2000, 96 percent were treated with these medications, while 87 percent were receiving stimulant medication for their ADHD symptoms in 2010, the study found.

The use of Strattera, a nonstimulant drug, dropped from 15 percent in the year it was introduced (2002) to 6 percent by 2010. The use of other nonstimulant treatments, such as clonidine (Catapres/Kapvay/Nexiclon), guanfacine (Intuniv/Tenex) and Wellbutrin (buproprion), was relatively constant, but reached a high of 13 percent in 2010 following the introduction of extended-release Intuniv, the researchers found.

One previous study, published online last September in the American Journal of Psychiatry, found that about 2.8 million children were taking ADHD medications. Those authors said their use has risen gradually, likely because more teenagers are taking these medications.

The authors of the current study don't think there's suddenly been a dramatic rise in the number of children with ADHD, but instead believe that public awareness campaigns, media coverage of ADHD and advertisements for new medications are probably some of the driving factors behind the rise in diagnoses.

"There's more of an awareness on the part of the parents about this disease," said Garfield.

He said that the authors don't know why more people are taking their children to see psychiatrists for treatment, but said if the trend continues, parents may have trouble finding a doctor to care for their child's ADHD, given the shortage of psychiatrists.

Other experts agreed that the incidence of ADHD probably isn't going up that quickly. "I don't think these data reflect true prevalence. I think it's the total frequency of visits related to ADHD is going up," said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park, N.Y.

"The American Academy of Pediatrics is encouraging pediatricians to play a more active role in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, so it's interesting to see that psychiatrists over time are now treating more," he said. "Pediatricians may be referring more, or as safety concerns have been raised by the FDA, it may be that families prefer to see a specialist."

Gidsy Goes Giddy When Ashton Talks Product [TCTV]

Screen Shot 2012-03-23 at 14.12.06When Gidsy secured a $1.4 million seed investment earlier this year it wasn't the clutch of high profile VCs and Angels that attracted everyone's interest so much as the presence of Ashton Kutcher in the financing round, who seems intent on making Berlin his personal investment project after doing similar with SoundCloud and Amen among others. If Airbnb sorts out your accommodation when you hit a city then Gidsy will find someone to help you do something there not unlike SideTour, Vayable or MyGuidie. But it's not just limited to travel, as CEO and founder Edial Dekker explained to me this week at London Web Summit, but workshops or any activity.

PFT: Saints' DT: Payton suspension's 'not right'

TEBOW1-articleLargeGetty Images

Much can be said about the trade that sent Tim Tebow from the Broncos to, of all teams, the New York Jets.? Actually, much already has been said.? And much more will be said.

And much will continue to be said for as long as Tebow is a member of the team.

So why not say some stuff about it right now?? I thought about coming up with 18 takes in honor of Frank Tripucka, but it?s late and I?m tired and if I start doing 18 takes for one thing then I need to do 18 takes for everything because I?m weird that way.? Actually, I?m weird in a lot of ways.

But not nearly as weird as the trade that sent Tim Tebow from the Broncos to, of all teams, the New York Jets.

1.? How?s this for a sense of urgency, Mark?

The Jets know that Mark Sanchez can, in the right situation, perform at a high level.? After all, he won four road playoff games in his first two NFL seasons.? But they can?t duplicate that sense of urgency during the regular season.

What better way to light a fire under his rear end than to bring the hottest name in the NFL to the Big Apple?

The Jets can claim that Tebow is the backup, and for now he is.? But once Sanchez starts throwing interceptions, the chants of ?Tebow? at MetLife Stadium will be so loud that they?ll hear them all the way back in Denver.

So it?s Sanchez?s job to lose.? And plenty of people fully expect him to eventually lose it.

2.? Introducing the T-Bone Offense.

Until Tebow becomes the full-time quarterback, he?ll be used in a version of the Wildcat package based on the things that worked best for him in Denver last year ? the read-option, the traditional option, and the unexpected fake handoff followed by a long pass to a receiver sprinting down the field in single coverage because nine guys are at the line of scrimmage trying to stop the run.

While Sanchez will be the starter and Tebow will be the backup, the T-Bone Offense will be the offense Tebow runs whenever he?s on the field ? whether it?s a surprise change of pace or Sanchez is injured or Sanchez is ineffective or it?s not a surprise change of pace after all but a regular appearance.

The starter is the guy who takes the field on the first offensive play of the game.? So while Sanchez will (for now) have that role, Tebow will be used as much as the coaching staff chooses ? and if he?s as effective for the Jets as he was against the Jets and against offensive coordinator Tony Sparano?s Dolphins last year, we may see Tebow far more often than we ever saw Brad Smith, even if Tebow technically is the backup.

3.? Somewhere, Bill Belichick is smiling.

Everything the Jets do seems to be motivated by a desire to one-up the Patriots in their own division or the Giants in their own backyard.? In this case, New England coach Bill Belichick has to be hoping that Tebow will become the starter before the first time the Pats and Jets play in 2012.

Last year, Belichick outscored Tebow?s Broncos 86-33.? And so it?s fair to say that Belichick, even with an undermanned defense in 2012, has figured out how to stop Tebow.

Count on Belichick doing more of the same in 2012.

4.? Jets barely avoid disaster.

Some Jets fans would say that the only thing worse than the team announcing that they?re trading for Tebow is the Jets announcing it twice.? But in that strange period of limbo on Wednesday, it looked like the Jets? failure to read Tebow?s contract would scuttle the trade because of salary advances paid by the Broncos that needed to be repaid by the Jets.

Failure to close the deal would have triggered a firestorm of criticism in New York.? Yes, there will already be plenty of criticism.? But it would have been much, much worse if the Jets had wanted him and then failed to get him because of negligence in the review of the documents.

5.? The ultimate Odd Couple.

When Peyton Manning supposedly was considering the Jets (you know, back before the Jets ?passed? on him), I said that Manning and Rex Ryan would be the ultimate odd couple.

I was wrong.

Rex and Tim Tebow make Felix Unger and Oscar Madison look like Bert and Ernie.

Sure, Tebow and his Buddy the Elf demeanor will always say and do the right things, enthusiastically.? On Wednesday night, for example, he casually brushed off the fact that Rex has a penchant for dropping ?F? bombs.

But that doesn?t mean Rex will be as comfortable being Rex in the presence of Tebow.? And if Rex tries to change the way he is because he?s concerned he?ll make Tebow uncomfortable, Rex will be uncomfortable, and things could get even weirder than they otherwise would be.

Then again, they can always break the tension with a gosh darn snack.

6.? Hard Knocks, Part II.

Speaking of gosh darn snacks, don?t the Jets now become the odds-on favorites for another season of Hard Knocks?

With Tebow and Santonio and Sanchez and Rex and Cromartie and the Incredible Hulk and all the other characters in that organization, a return visit would make the Jets an even bigger national attraction.

And it would be easy to justify.? Tebow said Wednesday night that he became a fan of Rex Ryan by watching Hard Knocks two years ago.

If Rex?s antics can attract Tebow, they can attract anyone.

7.? Santonio won?t be happy.

Speaking of Santonio, if he didn?t like the amount of balls flying his way with Sanchez last year, he?ll absolutely hate it when Tebow starts sailing the ball over Holmes? head or, possibly, not throwing it at all.

That?s the major flaw in the Jets? Tebow-driven renewed commitment to the ?ground and pound? offense.? They?ve decided to keep Santonio around for another year, which means they owe him millions in guaranteed money both this year and next year.? Which means that unless they trade him to, say, the Broncos, they need to find a way to keep him happy.

He won?t be happy playing with Tebow.

8.? Woody?s words look even more ridiculous.

Last week, Jets owner Woody Johnson claimed, presumably with a straight face, that the Jets ?passed? on Peyton Manning.

So they passed on Peyton, but they fell all over themselves to get Tebow?

No one believed Johnson when he said what he said about Manning.? Even fewer believe him now, if that?s even possible.

Then again, given the events in the NFL from the past few days, anything is possible.

9.? Tebowmania may not translate to Broadway.

There?s a presumption that any team for which Tebow plays will inspire legions of Tebowmaniacs.? But Jets fans hardly are sheep.? And regardless of whether the Tebow approach is genuine or phony, Jets fans will be far more likely to assume that it?s an Eddie Haskell routine.

Regardless, few Jets fans seem prepared to assume that Tebow can walk on the Hudson River.? In New York, he?ll attract more cynicism and attention and criticism than he ever imagined.

It?s unlikely that any of it will change him, but he ultimately may wish he?d been shipped home to Jacksonville.

10.? The Jaguars could still be his destiny.

In Jacksonville, the owner wanted him but the football operation was at best ambivalent.? In New York, the coaching staff and the front office were on the same page.

Eventually, if change comes in New York, Tebow could once again be out on his ear.

And Shad Khan will still be the owner of the Jaguars.? And he?ll still want to get the tarps off the seats at EverBank Field.

And he?ll still be interested in bringing Tebow home.

It?s hard not to think that?s exactly how this eventually will end.? Even though the Jags didn?t get him now, chances are they?ll get him later.

Or, depending on how the next season or two unfold, sooner.

Specific screening times and venues will be announced with the overall schedule on March 22.

2012 Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant

Barge (Director: Ben Powell)
This film examines the impact of one of America?s great rivers, documenting the next chapter of life on the Mississippi. Fascinating riverboat workers?notorious captains and seasoned first mates?expose both the decidedly colorful and highly specialized aspects of their profession.

Let the Fire Burn (Director: Jason Osder)
In 1985, police closed in on the Philadelphia row home headquarters of MOVE, a radical group some considered terrorists. Through archival footage, this film reveals a remarkable example of how intolerance, and incompetence, can lead to unthinkable acts of violence.

2012 SDF: In-the-Works

Caf? Sense (Directors: D.L. Anderson, Brooke Shuman)
In the last few decades, specialty roasting companies have tried to make the connection between the small farms that grow the plant to what we find at gas stations and in whipped drinks. Durham?s Counter Culture Coffee hosts a weekly tasting where drinkers learn to distinguish the flavors associated with different countries.

Can?t Stop the Water (Directors: Rebecca Marshall Ferris, Jason Ferris)
Over the last fifty years, Isle de Jean Charles has been gradually shrinking, and is now almost gone. Four months into filming the lives of the families that call this place home, one of the greatest environmental disasters in history left the people of this tiny island in south Louisiana with an even more uncertain future.

untitled LUCY film (Director: Elisabeth Haviland James)
Lucy Daniels believes a family secret radically impacted the trajectory of her life. Despite early promise, she endured brutal treatment in mental institutions only to pen a bestseller and win a Guggenheim fellowship, all before the age of twenty-two. Re-creations, animated dream sequences, and intimate interviews tell her story.

40th Anniversary of New Day Films

Anything I Want to Be (Director: Liane Brandon)
A teenager?s parents tell her time and again that she can grow up to be anything she wants to be. Through playful, yet troubling, reenactments, ?anything? is discovered to be what exists within the realm of certain limitations.

Betty Tells Her Story (Director: Liane Brandon)
A woman sits in a chair before the camera. At the urging of the filmmaker, she describes a past event. She finishes her story, but then the filmmaker asks her to recount it. The distinctions between the first and second telling are restrained yet perceptible, raising ideas about femininity and self-worth.

Growing Up Female (Directors: Jim Klein, Julia Reichert)
This documentary captures six women, from ages four to twenty-six, as they experience coming of age in America. Touchingly revelatory, this pioneering feminist film acknowledges the countless pressures applied to young women and the many forms these influences can take.

It Happens to Us (Director: Amalie R. Rothschild)
Women of different ages, races, and economic backgrounds boldly speak to having had an abortion. This diverse collection of stories articulate and connect the viewer to powerful, sometimes graphic, recollections of the physical and emotional experience.

Witness a day at an acupuncture shop in New York?s Chinatown, with Mom, Pop, and the family cat. A delightful, affectionate portrait of both a business and a marriage.

At the Garvald Bakery, a team of workers with mental disabilities prepare bread for all of Edinburgh. The participants, each in their own way, contribute to the rhythm of this choreographed effort.

Caretaker for the Lord (Director: Jane McAllister)??????????? 2011 Festival
The maintenance man of a church in Glasgow?s East End muses about its future as he mops the floors and changes the light bulbs. The run-down church ministers to more members of its vulnerable community than those in charge realize.

Ubiquitous and much-maligned crows are transformed into stately, mysterious objects of beauty. This film captures the intricate rhythms and textures of the birds flying and pecking their way through their world and ours.

For a Miracle (Po Cud) (Director: Jarek Sztandera)?????????? 2005 Festival
This astonishing film of the national pilgrimage of disabled people and their caregivers from Poland to Lourdes by train?under the auspices of Catholic clergy?is a surreal passage that inspires faith and mercy, anxiety and despair.

The Intimacy of Strangers (Director: Eva Weber)????????????? 2006 Festival
Cellphone conversations have the ability to collapse the distinctions between public and private space. Capturing intimate moments obliviously performed for strangers, this film is a love story of the modern age, transmitted for all to hear.

Leche (Director: Naomi Uman)???????????????????????????????????????????? 1999 Festival
A dreamlike evocation of a dairy farm in Mexico through a textured film surface?the filmmaker develops her film in buckets. A document of a timeless place and the magic of crafting things by hand.

Lost Book Found (Director: Jem Cohen)??????????????????????????? 1998 Festival
This film updates the venerable city symphony, but without the genre?s grandiose claims. Instead, this is more of a chamber piece; it starts as a personal documentary but then shifts from the private to the enigmatic.

A Love Supreme (Director: Nilesh Patel)??????????????????????????? 2002 Festival
In this stunning and elegant tribute, Nilesh Patel pays homage to his aging mother as he captures the beauty and artistry of her life?s work: making samosas. A delicacy.

Metacarpus (Director: Nicole Triche)????????????????????????????????? 2007 Festival
Magicians, musicians, doctors, and others sing the praises of their hands. A collage of insight and image portrays this special limb?s beauty and diverse utility, its development and distinctive form.

Picture Day (Director: Steven Bognar)??????????????????????????????? 2000 Festival
One school. 601 kids. 12 frames per kid. What do you get? This playful, funny parade of images reveals the range of possibilities contained in half a second?s worth of pictures.

Salt (Directors: Michael Angus, Murray Fredericks)?????????? 2009 Festival
Every year a photographer ventures to the middle of Lake Eyre, a desolate salt flat in South Australia, pitching camp at its very core. With neither land nor water in sight, he looks into the abyss and finds that, in the midst of nothingness, there is everything.

Seltzer Works (Director: Jessica Edwards)???????????????????????? 2010 Festival
Regular consumers are a rare breed but the dedicated owner of Gomberg Seltzer Works in Brooklyn takes great pride in his work and the details involved in creating the real throat-tingling spritz.

A Thousand Words (Director: Melba L. Williams)????????????? 2004 Festival
Williams?s lack of communication with her father, especially after a stroke silences his memories, leads her to explore his enthralling home movie footage and accomplished still photos from the Vietnam War, which speak of a fettered artistic soul.
