Diabetes is a national epidemic and one that affects Maryland and the Eastern Shore communities even greater proportions.

?The numbers are very high,? said Kathy Rogers, executive director of the American Diabetes Association Maryland regional office. ?Nearly 10 percent of all adults in Talbot County have diabetes, compared to 10.7 percent in Kent County and 12.1 percent in Dorchester County.?

The event marks the first time that a Tour de Cure, a national event organized by the American Diabetes Association, will take place on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

Event highlights:

?Local indie/rock/soul musician Kentavius Jones will perform on the eve of the event, May 18; all riders who generate $1,000 or more will be invited to a VIP party with Jones at Cottingham Farm

?Live band performance by Chester River Runoff will take place the day of the event, May 19

?Attendees will have access to many event festivities, including a beer garden, children?s activities

?More TBD

The course will begin at the Talbot County Community Center and will have 10-mile, 15-mile, 25-mile, 55-mile and 100-mile courses for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Minimum fund raising for anyone who participates is $200.

Seven-year-old Allison Holdgreve, newly diagnosed with Type-One Diabetes and the Youth Ambassador for the Chesapeake Bay Tour de Cure will be participating and will also be available for media interviews. Read more about Allison and her family here http://mod-maryland.blogspot.com/

?I am a living example of how changes to lifestyle and diet can have an impact on your health, even diabetes,? said Dave Tuthill, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hearthstone Health and Fitness which is set to open Easton, and is a presenting sponsor of Tour de Cure. ?In addition to supporting research to find a cure for diabetes, Tour de Cure will raise awareness about how to manage the condition and lead a normal life.?
