Facebook iOS app to get quicker, reports

Facebook iOS app to get quicker, reportsAccording to reports, the Facebook app for the iOS platform will become much quicker and will allow users to access the social networking site in a much faster way.

The social network's iPhone app will get a major speed boost, according to a new report by the New York Times. The report cited Facebook engineers and said that the social network is planning to completely revamp its app for Apple devices.

The report suggest that the latest version of the Facebook app is being tested by engineers at Facebook and is expected to be released sometimes during the next month. The report said that the app will most likely look similar but will work much faster.

It is believed that the new app will be built primarily using a coding language called Objective-C, which is also used to build many other iOS apps. The existing Facebook app is uses Objective-C for but many of its components are based on HTML5. Experts say that Objective-C is faster than HTML5 because it collects less information from the internet, unlike HTML5 that draws content directly from the internet.

Displaced Colo. residents wait as fire rages

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Colorado Springs residents forced from their homes by a raging wildfire took refuge with friends or family and crammed into hotels and shelters as Army troops helped firefighters protect the U.S. Air Force Academy from encroaching flames.

The blaze was burning out of control early Thursday in the mountains and within Colorado's second-largest city, after more than 30,000 evacuees frantically packed up belongings and fled.

The wildfire was one of many burning across the parched West, blazes that have destroyed structures and prompted evacuations in Montana and Utah and forced the closure of a portion of Zion National Park.

Shifting winds Wednesday challenged firefighters trying to contain the 29-square-mile Waldo Canyon blaze and extinguish hot spots inside Colorado Spring's western suburbs. The National Weather Service reported 60 mph winds and lightning above the fire Wednesday afternoon, but winds were calmer by nightfall.

"It won't stay in the same place," said incident commander Rich Harvey.

Neighborhoods where explosions of bright orange flame Tuesday signaled yet another house had been claimed were still dangerous, keeping authorities away from being to assess the damage.

But an AP aerial photo taken Wednesday of one neighborhood showed dozens of heavily damaged or destroyed homes.

Ed and Florine Gigandet took refuge in a hotel in Manitou Springs, which days earlier had been evacuated when the same fire passed through. They fled their home as ash fell on their driveway from an ominous orange smoke overhead.

Trying to learn about damage, the Gigandets drove to near their west Colorado Springs neighborhood to talk to police officers and see the area. They scoured media photos and spent hours on the phone with friends for any scrap of information. Authorities told the Gigandets it could be at least week before they're allowed home.

"We only packed clothes for four days," Florine Gigandet, 83, a retired photo printer, said. "I really thought that we'd be gone for only a day."

The displaced residents took stock of what they left behind. Some sat in coffee shops, others stood on bluffs to keep an eye on their neighborhoods, and others met with insurance company representatives.

The fire moved so fast that Laura Oldland grabbed damp laundry out of her drier and threw it into a suitcase. But she forgot her grandmother's dishes.

The Gigandets, avid golfers, left their clubs behind. "We should be out golfing," said Ed Gigandet, 81, a retired mining machinery sales analyst.

Meanwhile, the White House said President Barack Obama will tour fire-stricken areas of Colorado on Friday and thank firefighters battling some of the worst fires to hit the American West in decades.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said Obama's visit to Colorado, considered a key battleground state in the presidential election, would not tax the city's already-strained police force. Gov. John Hickenlooper said he expected the president might sign a disaster declaration that would allow for more federal aid.

The fire burned about 10 acres along the southwest boundary of the Air Force Academy campus. No injuries or damage to structures ? including the iconic Cadet Chapel ? were reported.

Late Wednesday night, Air Force Academy officials announced they were relocating about 550 cadets off academy grounds. About 200 cadets in summer academics were being moved to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, and 350 others in airmanship and other training programs were released to local sponsor families, the school said. The cadet area isn't immediately threatened, and an incoming class of more than 1,000 is still scheduled to arrive Thursday.

About 120 soldiers from nearby Fort Carson built firebreaks around parts of the academy, aided by equipment including 10 heavy bulldozers, four excavators, 13 military transportation and support vehicles, and one commercial road grader, Army officials said.

The full scope of the fire remained unknown. So intense were the flames and so thick the smoke that rescue workers weren't able to tell residents which structures were destroyed and which ones were still standing. Steve Cox, a spokesman for Mayor Steve Bach, reported that at least dozens of homes had been consumed.

Indeed, authorities were too busy Wednesday struggling to save homes in near-zero visibility to count how many had been destroyed in what is the latest test for a drought-parched and tinder-dry state. At one point, a team assessing the damage had to leave charred neighborhoods because of smoke and fire danger.

Carey said officials had no plans to release the numbers of homes destroyed ? insisting residents have a right to be told first, in private.

The FBI said it was investigating the cause of the blaze.

In addition to the some 30,000 evacuees, about 3,000 more people were evacuated to the west of the fire, Teller County authorities said Wednesday, and Teller County courts were closed through Thursday.

The Red Cross was accommodating victims at its shelters, with space enough for perhaps 2,500 people. Most evacuees were staying with family and friends.

Crews also were battling a deadly and destructive wildfire in northern Colorado and another that flared Tuesday night near Boulder.

Colorado wasn't the only state affected by fire, as several burned throughout the parched West.

Tom Harbour, director of fire and aviation management for the U.S. Forest Service, said there is competition for firefighting resources, including aircraft. "We're still at a point where we've got lots of available assets to mix and match on individual incidents."

Some states are seeing fires earlier this year, but Harbour said resources are far from being exhausted.

"With over 10,000 firefighters in the Forest Service and the ability to get over 700 aircraft of all types, we're feeling cautiously confident when you look at the season as a whole," Harbour said.

Among the fires elsewhere in the West:

? A 72-square-mile wildfire in central Utah has destroyed at least 56 structures, mainly homes, and continues to burn with little containment, authorities said Wednesday. Officials expected the damage estimate to rise considerably as they continue their assessment of the fire-ravaged area between Fountain Green and Fairview and north across the Utah County line. Officials returned to an evacuated area and found a woman dead Tuesday.

? The smaller New Harmony Fire near St. George started Wednesday afternoon and had grown to 2,000 acres by midnight, forcing an undetermined number of residents near New Harmony and Bumblebee to evacuate. The fire was burning about three miles north of Zion National Park, prompting park officials to close a canyon area popular with hikers known as the Kolob section.

? Wildfires that have torched more than 200 square miles and burned dozens of homes in southeastern Montana spread farther Wednesday, with additional evacuations ordered after a blaze south of Roundup jumped a perimeter line built by firefighters. The growing Dahl fire, which has burned more than 60 homes by one estimate, forced an unknown number of residents to leave their homes near its southern flank, on top of an estimated 600 people evacuated the day before.

"That's one of the most dangerous fires in the history of Montana," Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.

? A wildfire in the Bridger-Teton National Forest has grown from about 2,000 acres to 12,000 acres, or nearly 19 square miles, officials said Wednesday. Authorities worked to get campers out of the area.

Sanford detective wanted manslaughter charge for George Zimmerman

Sanford Police Detective Chris Serino recommended a manslaughter charge for George Zimmerman, who killed Trayvon Martin. The detective has been reassigned as uniformed patrolman on the graveyard shift.

George Zimmerman had a broken nose, a bruised head and passed two voice-stress lie-detector tests in the wake of his deadly fight with Miami Gardens high school junior Trayvon Martin.

But police records released Tuesday show in greater detail how the Sanford detective investigating the case was unconvinced that Zimmerman was legally justified when he shot Martin. Detective Chris Serino believed Zimmerman jumped to a ?faulty conclusion? about Martin, an unarmed teen who he said never used deadly force when he battered Zimmerman and caused him to frantically scream for help 14 times.

Days after several recorded interviews between Serino and Zimmerman were made public, the detective got a new job: On July 7, he starts in his new assignment as a uniformed patrolman on the graveyard shift, at the same pay.

?It?s not a demotion,? Sanford Police spokesman Sgt. David Morgenstern said of Serino, 45, who has been with the department for 15 years.

?There isn?t any more prestige in being a detective. We have officers who love uniform patrol. This was of his own free will.?

The new assignment was announced less than a week after former Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee was fired over the public outcry that resulted from the department?s handling of the case. And it was revealed hours after State Attorney Angela Corey released another batch of evidence in Zimmerman?s second-degree murder trial, raising speculation that Serino?s move to patrol was directly related to the controversial case.

Serino ?got demoted because he told the truth,? said Benjamin Crump, an attorney for Martin?s family.

On Tuesday, prosecutors released several videos and audio tapes, most of which had already been made public last week by Zimmerman?s attorney, Mark O?Mara. One video released Tuesday shows several minutes of previously unseen footage of Zimmerman discussing with police his doctor?s diagnosis of his injuries.

?I have a broken nose. She says I could use stitches, but she?d rather not put them in ? as long as I didn?t mess with my head. My skin is already healing nicely,? Zimmerman said at the end of a video where he walked through the scene with investigators the day after the Feb. 26 shooting. ?She says I didn?t need to put stitches in right away.?

As to the absence of wounds on other parts of his body, Zimmerman said: Martin ?was just focused on my head.?

Zimmerman said that his doctor also advised that he needed to let the swelling in his nose go down before it could be treated. Sanford Detective Doris Singleton noticed that the inflammation on the side of Zimmerman?s bruised head had gone down.

?My wife is an RN student, so she went to work,? Zimmerman said. ?Good to keep her busy, I guess.?

An unedited version of Serino?s sworn statement shows he believed the injuries were ?marginally consistent with a life-threatening violent episode described by him, during which neither a deadly weapon nor deadly force was deployed by Trayvon Martin.?

It Take a Village ? Picnic to thank our friends | Rowan Family Tree

This evening we had a wonderful picnic with our ?village? ? it was an evening to celebrate and thank all the people who have helped us with our kids over the past few months while Jason has been away. Our neighbors, friends? they have all babysat, fed them, walked them to school? and we are so lucky for them all. So we asked them to a BBQ to thank them tonight.

Yes, that is the worst decorated cake I have made in a while! but it still tells a story? it has all the family members of our village on it!

I?ll let the pictures do the talking ? It was a lovely, relaxed, time? and the girls got to bed exhausted but happy (and looking forward to their last day of school tomorrow!!)

Lobby's Tempe AZTravel & Leisure magazine just came out with its annual list of America?s best burger cities, and Phoenix didn?t make their readers? top 20. Apparently we don?t stack up to such burger-blessed locales as Savannah, Georgia (#12); Portland, Maine (#18); and San Juan, Puerto Rico (#5). Those readers obviously didn?t try any my 12 best burgers in the East Valley.

Nora Ephron dies at 71

(Photo: Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)"When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle" and "Silkwood" screenwriter Nora Ephron has died, according to the Washington Post and CBS News. She was 71 years old and was said to be suffering from leukemia.

Known as a prolific writer spanning film, stage, novels, works of journalism and blogs, Ephron was also an accomplished filmmaker, having both written and directed "Julie & Julia" (2009), "Bewitched" (2005), "You've Got Mail" (1998), "Michael" (1996), "Mixed Nuts" (1994), "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993) and "This Is My Life" (1992). She was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Born in 1941 in New York City to a writerly Jewish family, Ephron moved with her parents and three sisters to Beverly Hills when she was four. Both of her parents were screenwriters as are two of her sisters; and she has another sister who is a journalist and novelist.

Ephron majored in political science at Wellesley College but also wrote for the school paper, graduating in 1962. She interned at the White House during John F. Kennedy's administration and later became a reporter at the New York Post ? eventually gaining praise for inserting her own voice into her work as part of the "New Journalism" movement.

Her 1983 novel "Heartburn" ? which was later made into a film starring Meryl ?Streep and Jack Nicholson ? was inspired by her second marriage to famed Washington Post journalist Carl Bernstein (who helped break the Watergate story). Ephron is survived by her husband Nicholas Pileggi (writer of "Goodfellas") and two sons, Jacob and Max Bernstein.

Some actors appeared in Ephron-penned films multiple times:? Meryl Streep appeared in "Silkwood," "Heartburn" and "Julie & Julia"; Tom Hanks starred in "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail" as did Meg Ryan ? who also starred in "When Harry Met Sally."

Gamera II Team Smashes Previous Best Human-Powered Helicopter Flight Time

Zothecula writes "For over 30 years, the $250,000 for the American Helicopter Society's Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition prize has looked decidedly secure, but Gamera II has changed all that. Last week, Clark School of Engineering team pilots came close to breaking one of the competition's major milestones. Ph.D. candidate from Kyle Gluesenkamp from the School's mechanical engineering department, hand-cranking and pedaling like his life depended on it, managed to keep the huge quad-rotor craft aloft for 50 seconds, an impressive new world record that's currently awaiting validation by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA)." We previously covered their attempt to break the record last May.

Scientists twist light to send data: Beams of light can be twisted and combined to transmit data dramatically faster

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A multi-national team led by USC with researchers hailing from the U.S., China, Pakistan and Israel has developed a system of transmitting data using twisted beams of light at ultra-high speeds -- up to 2.56 terabits per second.

To put that in perspective, broadband cable (which you probably used to download this) supports up to about 30 megabits per second. The twisted-light system transmits more than 85,000 times more data per second.

Their work might be used to build high-speed satellite communication links, short free-space terrestrial links, or potentially be adapted for use in the fiber optic cables that are used by some Internet service providers.

"You're able to do things with light that you can't do with electricity," said Alan Willner, electrical engineering professor at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the corresponding author of an article about the research that was published in Nature Photonics on June 24. "That's the beauty of light; it's a bunch of photons that can be manipulated in many different ways at very high speed."

Willner and his colleagues used beam-twisting "phase holograms" to manipulate eight beams of light so that each one twisted in a DNA-like helical shape as it propagated in free space. Each of the beams had its own individual twist and can be encoded with "1" and "0" data bits, making each an independent data stream -- much like separate channels on your radio.

Their demonstration transmitted the data over open space in a lab, attempting to simulate the sort of communications that might occur between satellites in space. Among the next steps for the research field will be to advance how it could be adapted for use in fiber optics, like those frequently used to transmit data over the Internet.

The team's work builds on research done by Leslie Allen, Anton Zeilinger, Miles Padgett and their colleagues at several European universities.

"We didn't invent the twisting of light, but we took the concept and ramped it up to a terabit-per-second," Willner said. His team included Jian Wang, Jeng-Yuan Yang, Irfan M. Fazal, Nisar Ahmed, Yan Yan, Hao Huang, Yongxiong Ren and Yang Yue from USC; Samuel Dolinar from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory; and Moshe Tur from Tel Aviv University.

Wang, the lead author, left USC after completing this research and is now a professor at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.

This research was funded by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the InPho (Information in a Photon) program.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

Far from the dutiful progeny of "Dance Moms," these are individuals of uncommon skill, self-knowledge, maturity and drive. They're the real deal. And so is First Position.

All of the dollars and expertise that produced this summer's blockbusters could never produce a spectacle as wondrous as 11-year-old Aran Bell dancing his heart out.

Kargman ... brings a welcome empathy to this programmatic film that follows six hopefuls as they compete in something called the Youth America Grand Prix, which we're told is the most comprehensive ballet competition in the world.

The children are almost unearthly in their agility and elegance -- until they remove their shoes, and reveal their all-too-human abrasions and injuries.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Blair: Germany must underwrite eurozone debts

(AP) ? Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair says the eurozone can survive only if Germany agrees to underwrite the debts of the currency union's financially struggling members.

He told BBC television Sunday that safeguarding the euro "means treating the debts of one as the debts of all."

Blair says "the only thing that will save the single currency now is ... a sort of grand plan in which Germany is prepared to commit its economy fully to the single currency."

In return, other eurozone nations must implement sweeping reforms, he says.

Blair, who left office in 2007 and stood down as leader of the Labour Party, insists Britain could in the future join the euro.

Prime Minister David Cameron, of the rival Conservative Party, vows that won't happen during his tenure.

President's Ousting Ignites Firestorm

ASUNCION, Paraguay ? Paraguay's newly sworn-in president set about forming a new government Saturday as he promised to honor foreign commitments, respect private property and reach out to Latin American leaders to minimize diplomatic fallout and keep his country from becoming a regional pariah.

In a brief appearance before international journalists, Federico Franco tried to broadcast a sense of normality a day after lawmakers overwhelmingly voted to kick President Fernando Lugo out of office.

"The country is calm. I was elected (as vice president) in 2008 by popular vote. Activity is normal and there is no protest," Franco said.

His first two appointments were Interior Minister Carmelo Caballero, who will be tasked with maintaining public order in this poor, landlocked South American nation, and Foreign Minister Jose Felix Fernandez, who will immediately hit the road to try to appease fellow members of the Mercosur and Unasur regional trade blocs.

"Our foreign minister will go to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay to meet with authorities and explain to them that there was no break with democracy here. The transition of power through political trial is established in the national constitution," Franco said.

The Paraguayan Senate voted 39-4 the previous day to dismiss Lugo a little more than a year before his five-year term was to end, and Franco took the oath of office soon after. Lugo's ouster drew swift condemnation around Latin America from leaders who called it a de facto coup, and several presidents said they would seek Paraguay's expulsion from regional groups.

"This goes beyond Fernando Lugo. It goes beyond Paraguay. It's about true democracy for all of our America," said Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, adding that his country will not recognize the new government.

Cuba called it a "parliamentary coup d'etat executed against the constitutional President Fernando Lugo and the brother people of Paraguay."

Criticism came not just from the left but from conservative governments, too.

Chile said Lugo's removal "did not comply with the minimum standards of due process," and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said "legal procedures shouldn't be used to abuse. ... What we want is to help stability and democracy be maintained in Paraguay."

Given the tough talk, Franco could find mending fences to be a tall order.

"It looks terrible throughout the region," said analyst Adam Isacson of the Washington Office on Latin America, a think tank. "It (Lugo's ouster) doesn't look like a deliberative process, and what it looks like is that a president can be removed simply for being unpopular, or making unpopular decisions."

"The new government is going to be pretty isolated for the whole time that it's in power," Isacson said. "For Paraguay's neighbors and trade partners, I think there's probably not great cost involved in isolating the country for a year or more, and then re-recognizing whatever government is elected next year."

That would be a scenario similar to what played out in Honduras following the June 2009 ouster of Manuel Zelaya, which was also portrayed by those who took over as a legal, constitutional transition, even as it was denounced elsewhere.

Honduras' interim president was isolated by many Latin American governments, and his elected successor, Porfirio Lobo, only really got in the good graces of some in 2011 after Venezuela's Hugo Chavez brokered a reconciliation deal with Zelaya.

Lugo resigned as a Roman Catholic bishop to run for president in 2008 against the wishes of Pope Benedict XVI, who grudgingly accepted the resignation when it became clear Lugo would not be dissuaded.

On Saturday, the Vatican's envoy to Paraguay stopped short of recognizing the new government but expressed satisfaction there has been little unrest other than some confrontations between Lugo supporters and police during the Senate trial.

"I am very pleased that the people and authorities have thought of the good of the country, which is to keep giving one's best for the fatherland," Antonio Ariotti said, adding that he would read a message from the Vatican in the evening.

The German ambassador was also seen visiting the presidential palace.

"We will continue as normal with all cooperation agreements with Paraguay. We see the process of change happening within the laws and the constitution, because no parliament makes a coup d'etat," Ambassador Claude Robert Ellner.

The U.S. State Department urged "all Paraguayans to act peacefully, with calm and responsibility, in the spirit of Paraguay's democratic principles."

At Lugo's home in a quiet residential neighborhood of Asuncion, a close political ally said the former priest would not be making any comment Saturday.

Lugo was in good spirits, had spoken by phone the previous night with leaders like Chavez, and was now focused on moving his things out of the presidential residence with the help of his nephews, said Sen. Alberto Grillon, one of the four to back Lugo in Friday's vote.

Lugo had locked horns with a virulent opposition from the beginning of his term in 2008. He was criticized by some as being unyielding and unwilling to compromise; meanwhile Paraguay's powerful elite, long accustomed to getting their way during 61 years of Colorado single-party rule, fought Lugo's attempts to raise taxes on No. 1 export soy and redistribute farmland to the poor majority.

There had been talk of impeaching Lugo in the past, but there was never enough support in congress for such a drastic step. Ultimately, a deadly forest clash between police and landless protesters cost Lugo all but a handful of votes in both legislative houses, setting the stage for his rapid removal.

Home Improvement With 1 Or 2 Simple Words Of Advice

Taking on a home improvement project of any sort can be stressful and challenging if you're unready for that project. Getting useful pointers and information before you begin your project is intending to make the process of improvements less of a serious challenge. Find handy tips by reading this article.

When brooding about home enhancements, think green! It's a terrific way to add price as well as to be ecologically friendly. Putting in an energy efficient furnace or air conditioning will not just make your living space more comfortable, but also save you money and keep the earth cleaner longer.

Think about your standard of living before visible aesthetics when beginning home improvements. A pond in your front garden could be nice, but having your kid fall in and drown would be horrifying. You may wish to install a desk, but the money could be be used more wisely on installing air conditioning in a Florida home.

In order to get the most out of your air conditioning and heating system, clean or replace your air filters. Dirty air filters can reduce air movement in your vents, causing your system to work harder to cool or heat your home, therefore using more energy and costing you more money. You can find replacement filters at your local shop or perhaps occasionally at your local superstore.

A superb renovation and way to save cash is to install a whole-house fan. These are wonderful power sources savings because they generally use one tenth the electricity of an air conditioner. If you live in a zone where aircon is not required year round, this is a great alternative option to central air.

One valuable DIY project that would save your cash is the installation of ceiling fans. Having a fan in each of your rooms can help to keep them cool and allow the air to circulate. If you use the fans instead of aircon, your summer energy bill will be significantly lower.

Installing ceiling fans will reduce your electricity bill, add value to your home and improve the look of your house. Ceiling fans circulate and cool the air in your house, particularly during summers evenings. This can truly help in lowering the price of aircon. Ceiling fans also add a hint of style unlike any other accessory!

If you do not already have some, install some ceiling fans in all your rooms. You can use these to chill rooms and rotate the air, reducing the necessity to use your air-con unit. This in turn will save you money on your electric bill and most likely increase the expectancy of your air conditioner.

Now you have learned some helpful tips and info regarding home improvement, you are ready to get out your tools and take on the problem of improving your house. Take your time and carefully consider what you're doing and you'll appreciate all of the work you've done when it is complete.
